Illustration Throwback Thursday #29

September 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Illustration Throwback Thursday

Back in 2006 a company that wanted to market a series of drinking mugs featuring the caricatured heads of celebrity athletes called “Mugheads” called me to do some caricatures for some prototypes. The idea was they would pitch these to pro sports teams as stadium giveaways, etc. The product never got off the ground but they did produce a couple of prototype “mugheads”, including one of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. I discovered early that it was going to be tough to do these designs because they 1) had to conform to a general mug shape in order to work with the product and 2)… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Tuesday Edition

September 20th, 2016 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Missed Monday MADness yesterday after my busy workshop weekend. Here’s a Tuesday edition… a look back at the original pencil roughs of MAD‘s parody of the film “Watchmen”, written by Desmond Devlin from MAD #499, April 2009. Here’s the final art. The last panel was rethought from the original roughs: READ MORE

My first caricature workshop finished up yesterday here in Minnesota. I think it went well! It was a pleasure to have such a great group of artists, all pictured above in the workshop T-shirt illustration I did. Thanks for coming, all! I hope everybody got something out of the weekend. Sunday Mailbag- Sketchbook on Amazon?

September 18th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Will your book “Sketch o’ the week Vol 1” be available on Amazon like your “Mad Art of Caricature”? A: No, because Sketch o’the Week Vol. 1 isn’t really a book, not in the official sense. It’s just a self-published collection of sketches. The Mad Art of Caricature is a real book with an ISBN number, Library of Congress Control Number, is distributed with a real distributor and carried by book wholesalers like Ingram, Baker & Taylor and Barnes & Noble. I didn’t think it was worth going through all that to make Sketch o’the Week Vol. 1 an official book and have it… READ MORE

The Tutorial Mindset

September 16th, 2016 | Posted in General

Tonight kicks off my first caricature workshop weekend! I’ll be working with 13 students all through the weekend on how to draw caricatures. The students range from total beginners to seasoned caricature pros that frankly draw better than I do and I’ll be doing the learning. They have come from as close as right here in the Twin Cities to as far away as China. I’ve been thinking a lot leading up to this week about teaching caricature and the best way to approach it, and looking back over some of the comments I’ve gotten on my The Mad Art of Caricature book I realized… READ MORE

Illustration Throwback Thursday #28

September 15th, 2016 | Posted in Illustration Throwback Thursday

Back in late 2008 and early 2009 I did a series of spot illustrations for a small newspaper in (I think) North or South Carolina called “The Independent”. They accompanied a weekly feature with stories on local politicians/business people and other local “color”. Some were caricatures of the locals and some were just cartoons. They were quick turnaround jobs, and just black and white. Pen and ink with digital grays. READ MORE
