Sunday Mailbag: Airbrushing Process Tutorial

February 25th, 2018 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: In your book you are describing the sequence you are foll0wing doing life caricatures. Do you also have a sequence for the coloring with the airbrush, after the pencil drawing is finished (concerning areas and/or used colors)? Do you still stick to the sequence when doing digital life caricatures? A: I’ve actually been meaning to post a tutorial on live caricature airbrushing but have never gotten around to it. The following is something I put together years ago to show the basic process. I use a different process for digital color, though… this is just for airbrushing live caricatures. The colors are for a… READ MORE

Caricature Book Kickstarter!

February 22nd, 2018 | Posted in News

I usually do not promote crowd-sourcing projects here, but as my artwork is involved with this one and part of the proceeds go to a very good cause, I’m making an exception. Caricaturist (and recent Golden Nosey winner) Manny Avetisyan is looking to produce a very unique book via Kickstarter that gives fifteen people (and five couples) the opportunity to be subjects in the book, getting drawn by as many as 27 (and possibly a few more) of the best live caricaturists on Planet Earth. That’s right, YOU can be one of the models, with page after page of caricatures of YOU from a massively… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Workshop Sketch!

February 21st, 2018 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Sorry no time this week for a Batman villain sketch… I’m really under the gun with a deadline. Instead, here’s a little look at what we do in one of my caricature workshops. The above is one of 30 faces in our workshop book that we draw live in class. The book contains a selection of different face types, ages, races, male/female, etc. Part of what we do is examine each face, discuss observations and how to exaggerate what we see, and I draw the face along with the class with my drawing projected on a big screen as it’s being done. The above was… READ MORE
