Q: I’ve been tasked with creating a multiple page “comic” featuring a client, her family and pets. The project is a secret and it’s been difficult to acquire references of some of the subjects to draw in various poses and at various angles. I ended up gathering a lot of reference from their Instagram, printing it out, and also printing a mirror image. I think I’ll get by, but how do you approach clients about likeness references when bidding a job? A: I’m just very up front about the fact that how well the caricatures turn out is very much determined by how good the… READ MORE

Our 60’s Bat-villains series continues with Vincent Price as “Egghead”! Original available in the Studio Store. BatFacts: When filming this episode there was to be a big “egg fight” in the finale, and Vincent Price was required to hit Burt Ward (Robin) with an egg. This makes sense considering I was asked to do traditional comic book style word balloons and have a more “comic book” feel in my latest MAD parody work. It was also an early rumor they were going back to the original comic book format.. READ MORE

I figured I might have to add the name of the 60’s Batman villain these actors portrayed since the name recognition on many has been lost a bit in the 50 years since the show was on the air… This is David Wayne and the Mad Hatter… original available in the Studio Store. Bat Facts: David Wayne appeared in more films with Marilyn Monroe than any other actor… four in total: As Young as You Feel (1951), We’re Not Married (1952), O. Henry’s Full House (1952), and How to Marry a Millionaire (1953). READ MORE

I just finished about 6 weeks of nonstop deadlines, workshops and travel… so this week on Tom’s Mad Blog I’m just going to shut up and draw a bunch of 60’s Batman villains. Here’s a sketch of the stunning Eartha Kitt as “Catwoman”. Original available in the Studio Store if you are interested. BatFacts: Eartha Kitt took over the role of Catwoman for the third and final season of Batman. The reason for this, according to Kitt’s first episode screenwriter Stanley Ralph Ross was “because Julie was doing a movie at the time. I think it was “McKenna’s Gold”. READ MORE

I usually don’t scan the full sized pencil from a movie/TV parody in MAD, since I do the roughs at print size and then get all the review/approval/direction at that stage. For some reason I have the full page scans of the final pencils for the complete movie parody “Spider-Sham Too” from MAD #446, October 2004, written by Dick DeBartolo. So, here are examples of my finished pencils, done on bristol board at 200% of print size, over which I then ink and scan to color (clicky any to embiggen): READ MORE
