Workshop Warmups- Joni Mitchell!

August 9th, 2019 | Posted in General

We had a lot of old school subjects for our warmups last weekend. Here’s one of 60/70’s music icon Joni Mitchell. Funny, I spend some time at each workshop teaching people that cheekbones are usually much higher on the face than most people draw them, and then they pick a subject for a warm-up who has unusually low (and big) cheekbones. Workshop Warmups: Gene Wilder!

August 7th, 2019 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Under a multiple deadline crunch right now so no time for a new “sketch o’the Week”. Instead here’s one of our warmup sketches from my workshop in Washington DC last weekend, Gene Wilder. First thing on the second day of the workshop we do four warmup sketches of subjects suggested on the spot by the class. We spend 10-15 minutes on each. I search for and then project an image on the left and then draw it on the right side as seen above while the class also draws it. It gets us revved up for a long day of drawing. READ MORE

August 6th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

In our last episode, I told the story of how I was lucky enough to get to meet Quentin Tarantino on the set of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” to deliver the original prop art I did for him. During our conversation he told me about his idea to do a parody of the fictitious “Bounty Law” TV show that Leonardo DiCaprio‘s character was supposed to have starred in back in the late 50’s early 60’s. I told him we should pitch that to MAD and see what happens. What happened was the folks at MAD thought it was a great idea, so in… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Illustration Approach?

August 4th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: You’ve said that when you do live caricatures, you draw features in a specific order, starting with the eyes. I’m curious whether you have a similar approach when you “flesh out” the caricatures in your illustrations, or do you first work with the head shapes and body outlines since the character placement is as important as the caricature itself? Or does your process vary from project to project, depending on how many caricatures the project requires and how restricted your layout is? I ask because I’m trying to develop a workflow of my own, but I know that sometimes you get better results when… READ MORE
