MADness #159: Horror of Quakenstein!

January 5th, 2026 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Time again for another step on the rapidly shrinking road that was a look back at my work for MAD Magazine! This feature was written by my CLAPTRAP co-conspirator Desmond Devlin and appeared in MAD #45, October 2025. It’s a mash up of different “Frankenstein” movies and a political piece. This issue was released just this past August, so we are only four months back now!

I think this was the piece that convinced me, at least for now, that MAD really was going to keep doing some new content in every issue. Each time I got a new assignment it just seemed likely it was just a temporary thing. This one marked a third consecutive issue with a decent amount of new stuff in it (this issue had 14 pages of new stuff including the Fold-In). It seems like DC is committed to keeping this going for the foreseeable future.

RFK Jr. is a hideous human being in all senses of the description so it was a delight to caricature him, and of course Marty Feldman is a caricaturist’s field day… it’s a shame Sergio Aragonés killed him. Add in all the classic mad scientist lab and castle stuff and I had a lot of fun doing this one.

Clicky to embiggen…

We are very nearly caught up to present day! The next job I did for MAD marked a big milestone for me with the magazine, so toon in next Monday for that!

I’ve been away for a while, I know they reduced the number of issues for MAD, but is it like, still going? I thought I heard something about it ending for good too, but it seems there are some things still being put out?

MAD is still published every other month. Right now each 56 page issue contains anywhere from 12-16 pages of new material, a new cover and a new “Fold-In” on the inside back cover. The rest is classic material that revolves around whatever the issue’s “theme” is. For example the latest issue was #47 (Feb 2026). It’s theme was “the workplace”, so both new and classic stuff all had to do with working, job, the office, etc.
