MADness #151.5: O’ Batman, My Batman!
It’s time for another entry in the long and dusty tome that is the history of my work for MAD Magazine. Holy New Content, Batman! This would be the first new piece inside the magazine I had done in eight months. MAD Empress Suzy Hutchinson convinced DC to open the checkbook so SOMETHING inside the magazine related to the current subject matter on the cover, and this issue was all about “The Batman” film that had just come out. So, Desmond Devlin and I teamed up on this two pager that appeared in MAD #23, February 2022.
Above are the pencils I turned in. I originally had Kilmer pinching his bat-nipples but the powers-that-be nixed that gag. Instead I drew him cupping his chest. Not as funny, IMO. I also missed the part in the script where the “note” from Alan Moore was supposed to be on a signed photo of him. I made those changes and just went to final.
One thing is for sure, this was the best caricature of Walt Whitman I had ever done.
It would be almost a full year before I would get another assignment from MAD, this time for their 70th anniversary issue, and it would be somethgin I didnlt think we’d ever do again of the magazine… a movie parody! Toon in next week, same Bat-time. Same Bat-channel.
