Please forgive this reposting of an old sketch, but in light of events today I thought it appropriate. I am headed out this morning to Washington DC to meet up with a group of cartoonists from the National Cartoonists Society, and then we are off on another USO tour to met and draw for US troops like we did last year at this time. Well, it finally happened. Yesterday was the first day since the inception of The MAD Blog that there was no post. Not even a Dreaded Deadline Demon. I will plead exception as I was trapped in airports with delayed flights and missed connections and did not arrive back home until midnight last night. Oh well. I often get requests from readers to post rougher sketches and doodles on the blog as opposed to more meticulously drawn out pieces. Those ridiculously rendered and worked up “sketches” you see on many an art blog aren’t really sketches or studies anyway… they are more like illustrations with all the thinking and exploring worked out of them. In honor of the release of a ton of remastered Beatles albums on CD and the video game “The Beatles: Rock Band” this week’s sketch subject is the late John Lennon. Lennon is probably the most elusive of the Fab Four to try and caricature. His look changed a lot over the years, and different angles of his face seemed to reveal different and sometimes opposing observations. This week’s subject is a fellow caricaturist and ISCA member Rocky Sawyer who’s caricature I did for the International Society of Caricature Artists “Firing Squad”. The “Firing Squad” is a forum on the ISCA Message Board where members post pictures of themselves and then they are drawn by other members. A fun idea and it results in lots of caricatures in many different styles. I don’t get much time to participate but Rocky’s wife e-mailed me asking if I’d take a shot at her husband as it was his birthday, so I thought it would make an interesting sketch o’the week.
