Sketch o’the Week: Donald Sutherland!

July 3rd, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

We have to take a quick break from our “Memorable Movie Moments” series to pay tribute to a terrific actor who just passed away… the great Donald Sutherland. When I read of his passing I knew I was going to have to draw him… but in which role? He’s done so many memorable ones over the years. I was leaning toward his “Hawkeye” Pierce from the film version of M*A*S*H*, but settled for his turn as Sgt. Oddball from “Kelly’s Heroes”. I drew him a number of times in the MAD parodies of the “Hunger Games” films as well. Here’s a few of them:   READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Frankly My Dear…

June 26th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” with this week’s sketch. I have been too heavy on the macho moments featuring tough guys, guns, gangsters, or babes in bikinis with knives, so this one is all about romance! Here’s Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh from the closing scene of “Gone with the Wind”. Usually only the smartest, strongest, best looking, and best smelling of the readers of my weekly newsletter “The Ink Stained Wretch” (i.e. paid subscribers) get to see the full length video of me doing my “Sketch o’the Week” in real time. Not this week, though! I’m sharing that video for everyone on YouTube! If… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Ursula Andress!

June 19th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I thought I should pick a “Famous Movie Moment” that doesn’t feature some guy or guys with a gun, and draw a female character… but in retrospect this choice might be even more male-centric than the tough guy scenes I’ve been doing. However I’m not going to apologize for getting to draw the beautiful Ursula Andress as “Honey Ryder” in her emerging from the sea scene in “Dr. No”. That scene became iconic not only in cinema but in the world of fashion. The white bikini she wore was credited for popularizing the bikini, skyrocketing sales of the style of swimwear amid the beginnings of… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Well… do ya, Punk?

It’s time for another “Famous Movie Moment” caricature sketch! This week’s moment features a young Clint Eastwood in the 1971 film “Dirty Harry” when he utters his famous line ““You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’. Well, do ya, punk?”. The film was a huge box office success and spawned four sequels. It is also often credited as inspiring a whole genre of films centered on an “unorthodox, violent, alienated cop” theme. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: The Godfather!

June 5th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Here we go with another another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch! This week’s subject is the “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” scene from 1972’s “The Godfather”. Everyone knows this scene. It’s one of the most famous lines in all of cinema history, spoken by Marlon Brando‘s character Vito Corleone. The movie was nominated for ten academy awards, winning three including “Best Actor” for Brando. Want to watch me draw the above sketch, along with running commentary? What are you, a masochist?!? Well, all righty then. Become a Premium Subscriber to my weekly newsletter! READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Christopher Walken!

May 29th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch, and this one needs more cowbell. In “The Deer Hunter”, Christopher Walken‘s character Nikanor “Nick” Chevotarevich endures a lot as a soldier and prisoner of war in Vietnam, and ends up killing himself in a game of Russian roulette in a Saigon gambling den. There’s a lot more to the story. It’s a brutal and tragic film. Walken won an Academy Award for his role. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Mr. DeMille, I’m Ready for My Close Up!

May 22nd, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch, this week featuring Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard”. This is of course from the famous final scene, where the deranged Norma believes she’s making a new picture rather than being arrested for murder. She over-dramatically descends the grand staircase in her mansion mugging for the camera. Some call it a “black comedy”, but I think it’s more of a satire on Hollywood and obsession with fame. Sketch o’the Week: You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat!

May 15th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Here’s another of those famous moments in movie history that needs no preface, explanation, or context… it’s completely encapsulated in a single expression. The moment when Roy Scheider‘s “Chief Brody” first sees the shark in “Jaws” is part of movie history. In a rare departure from tradition, this original sketch is still available to buy! Jaws was released in 1975. I was nine years old, and this movie had a profound effect on me that I still remember to this day. Did I somehow see the film at only 9? I actually do not remember if I did or not. I doubt it. My parents… READ MORE
