Sketch O’The Week

Here’s a stab at the famously hard-to-caricature William Shatner. Actually these days he’s a lot easier to capture than he was in the 60’s as a younger man. Boston Legal is one of The Lovely Anna‘s favorite TV shows. BTW, sorry for the ugly “©2008 Tom Richmond” in the image, but I am going to start adding that to anything I put on the internet to try and safeguard as best I can against the possible passage someday of the Orphan Works Act. Almost forgot “Sketch o’the Week” today. In honor of the 2008 World Series, which starts tonight, here’s a quick pencil study of baseball’s meek commissioner “Bud” Selig. Who am I rooting for in the Series? I guess if I had to choose I’d go with Philly, just because I think a team needs to be around for more than a decade before they deserve to be in the World Series. The whole Florida Marlins thing in 1997 and 2003 still makes me a little sick to my stomach. I’m not sure Philly can win it, though. I think it will all come down to whether… READ MORE

This week’s sketch is a quick 10 minute or so study of “Mr. Madonna”, director Guy Ritchie. Actually it is a disservice to him to say he’s only famous as he’s married to Madonna. In fact he’s a pretty good film maker. His movie “Snatch” with Brad Pitt and Jason Stratham is a favorite of mine. Hilarious. READ MORE

As promised, a sketch of actor Nathan Fillion. I am not really familair with the actor, as I have only seen the Firefly movie (once) and no episodes of the show nor seen him in any other programs. My observations: He has wide set eyes and a wide nose bridge. He has a somewhat flat and broad nose all the way to his nostrils. His brow is very pronounced. His jaw is square but he has a small chin, and a narrow mouth with thin lips. His eyes have an odd “walleye” sort of look like they are starting off in slightly different directions. Low… READ MORE

I had high hopes of doing a sketch here in Germany and then uploading it to the blog and having that serve as the “Sketch o’the Week”. However Landstuhl is a small town and finding a place with a scanner that would serve is proving too convoluted a process, so I am going to cheat this week and post a couple of old sketches for the “Supercapers” job I did this summer that I happened to have on my MacBook Pro. Oliver Muirhead and Tommy “Tiny” Lister Clint Howard These pencils were inked and colored and used in the semi-animated credits of the movie. I… READ MORE

Not nearly as ambitious as last week’s sketch, but here’s a study of another TV actor: Michael C. Hall, star of Showtime’s Dexter. I’ve never seen the show, but I hear it’s pretty good. Watching TV is one thing I just don’t have the time for… except for a few choice shows and whenever I am required to study a show for a MAD job. READ MORE

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to draw for a while now… some faces are just made to be caricatured. Hugh Laurie, star of the TV show “House“. READ MORE

This week’s sketch is a study of fashion maven Donatella Versace. I came across the reference photo in a tabloid article called “Plastic Surgery Shockers!” There’s not much more to say… except this could be Madonna on a bad day. READ MORE
