This just in: after only about two weeks of being in existence The Cartoonist Studio website has already significantly lowered it’s standards. Yes, The MAD Blog has learned that my virtual studio on TheCartoonist Studio.com was just added today, along with those of Chuck Ayers, Brian Crane and Jan Eliot… although their inclusion in no way demonstrates a lowering of standards. … to do my annual post about The MAD Blog‘s birthday. As of June 26th, the MAD Blog has been chugging along for 4 years. The stats as of today: 1,594 posts 5720 comments 0 accidental deaths or dismemberments 1 regular reader (Hi, Mom!) So far so good. Up until my recent decision to take Saturday’s off from posting there has been at least one post every day. A few weeks ago I mentioned the upcoming “MAD’s Greatest Artists” release featuring the great Sergio Aragon?¬©s, which is going to be a must have for the ol’ bookshelf. Well, it looks like the ol’ bookshelf is going to need some extra room this fall for what is sure to be not only another gem about another legendary MAD great, but one that is truly as individual and unique as the artist himself. A biography of the incomparable Al Jaffee is scheduled for release this fall from HarperCollins. Yesterday a new website called The Cartoonist Studio quietly launched into cyberspace. Created by cartoonist Peter Guren and Anthony Leonardi, the website is a virtual visit to the studios of many of your favorite cartoonists and a centralized place to interact with them. App developer Comixology just released the DC Comics app for the iPhone and the iPad, bringing DC comic’s titles to these mobile devices directly from the publisher. Like Comixology’s Marvel Comics app, the DC Comics app is free and does include a few free comics like the Batman: Black and White series and some preview books. Full issues are $1.99. Hard to believe but we are only one month away from the start of San Diego Comic Con. I managed to attend for the first time in a few years last year, and it looks like I’ll make it again this year. I still haven’t figured out how to get a booth space or Artist’s Alley table of my own… at least not before I’m living in a “retirement community” somewhere… so you can find me at the National Cartoonists Society booth a few times during the show as well as a signing at the DC Comics booth. According to this article on NorthJersey.com, a new documentary on the career of the late, great Will Elder screened at the 2010 Toronto Jewish Film Festival back in April to a “pleasantly surprising” turnout. “The Mad Playboy of Art” takes a look inside the life and career of Will Elder, one of the principal founding artists for MAD Magazine and long time collaborator with Harvey Kurtzman. The film is being made by Elder’s son-in-law Gary VandenBergh.
