September 16th, 2011 | Posted in News

This week’s sneak peek is the opening splash of Chapter Seven: Drawing Live Caricatures. In this chapter, I go over the challenges of doing quick-draw style caricatures from a live model(s), discussing techniques on approaching and executing the drawings, a complete step-by-step of the process, plenty of tips and things to consider like line weights, common problems and pitfalls to avoid, and finally ending with several sample drawings from photos. This chapter is 20 pages long and contains over 55 illustrations. Book delivery update: As I wrote earlier in the week, I have received a couple of advanced copied of the actual bound book off… READ MORE

A Look at the Final Printed Book!

September 12th, 2011 | Posted in News

Late last week I received three advance copies of my book, The Mad Art of Caricature! from the printer via Fed Ex. These are not proofs but actual, bound press copies from the full print run, and are exactly the same as the rest of the books. The printer sends these out in advance of the shipment of the rest of the books, so the publisher can get a look at the final product. The above is a short video of me paging through one of these copies. I am quite pleased with the printing, especially given the trouble we had with the first… READ MORE

New INSANELY AWESOME MAD Book

September 1st, 2011 | Posted in MAD Magazine

The gang at MAD just released a new book, INSANELY AWESOME MAD, that is geared toward the viewership of the animated MAD show on the Cartoon Network. There is an interesting selection of work inside, and it makes you get a better idea of what kind of viewers they are getting, or are aiming at appealing to, with the CN show. There are no movie or TV show parodies. You will find several examples of Sergio‘s “A MAD Look at…”, a bunch of Spy Vs. Spys (all classic Antonio Prohias ones, but nicely colored), several Don Martin classics (also colored) as well as many other… READ MORE

NOTICE: Book is PRE-ORDER Only

August 26th, 2011 | Posted in News

This week I have started getting a few PayPal transaction disputes from people who have ordered the book and are wondering why they haven’t gotten it yet. Huh? I am sure I have been very clear about this- all orders right now for the book are PREORDERS. The printing process is going on right now, as we speak (figuratively), in Korea through Asia Korea Printing, and the bound copies will shortly be shipping to me here in Minnesota. Printing was delayed somewhat by come color/value issues with the proofs, but that has been resolved and I had taken possible technical delays into account when estimating… READ MORE

Friday Book Sneak Peek- Chapter 3

August 19th, 2011 | Posted in News

Click for a closer look… Each Friday for the next several weeks I will post the opening pages to a chapter of my book, The Mad Art of Caricature!, along with a description of the chapter’s contents. Since I’ve already done this for chapters one , two, and nine, that leaves five more chapters after this week, which should be about right for the arrival of the printed books on my doorstep. Chapter Three is about head shapes, which I consider to be the most important aspect of doing caricature. In it I discuss why they are so important, techniques to “see” them and to… READ MORE

Jim Thome: The 600 Club!

August 16th, 2011 | Posted in News

Congratulations to Minnesota Twins slugger Jim Thome for bashing home run number 600 last night! He’s one of only eight ballplayers to accomplish this feat in Major League Baseball. At 40 he’s the oldest player to do it but reached the milestone in one of the fewest at-bat totals. Thome spent most of his career playing against the Twins when with Cleveland and Chicago, but tried as I might I just couldn’t hate the guy. He’s one of the true gentlemen of the game and a throwback to the old ballplayer who played for the love of the game and not money. He’s been one… READ MORE
