Book News: Korean Edition!

June 23rd, 2015 | Posted in News

I just signed a deal with a Korean publisher to have my book translated into Korean and sold worldwide in that language. Interesting that Korean would be the first foreign language edition of The Mad Art of Caricature, as opposed to Spanish or Mandarin, which you would think has a much larger potential selling market. I had a Spanish publisher inquire about rights once but the deal went nowhere. No other foreign language publishers have shown any interest. The above image is just a mock-up I did for this post… the actual Korean cover will no doubt be different (and accurate in the translation… that’s… READ MORE

Website 3.0!

June 13th, 2015 | Posted in News

The new website is finally up and running (sort of)! There are a number of things that need fixing, and the Studio Store is completely offline for the moment, but the new design and layout is in place and running smoothly (more or less). So what’s new? Well, this is a much sleeker and less cluttered website, and infinitely more mobile-friendly. It changes dynamically with the device you are using, so on a smartphone you have a different layout and drop down menu functions than you have on a tablet or a desktop. Overall the site should load and run much faster, and be a… READ MORE

Ich bin ein MAD Leser? Not in Australia…

June 4th, 2015 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Number One Son Tom recently returned from a three week college choir tour of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and he brought me home this issue of the German MAD magazine! MAD still has a few foreign language editions out there (though not as many as they used to have), and the German MAD is one of them. The way these work is the foreign edition licenses the MAD name and format, and gets a certain amount of content from the U.S. version of the magazine. They translate that into their language and then fill the rest of the issue with MAD-flavored work but… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Mort’s Medal!

June 1st, 2015 | Posted in Monday MADness

Possibly the biggest highlight of a weekend full of highlights at the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Awards last week in D.C. was the bestowing of the NCS Medal of Honor to the incomparable Mort Drucker. Mort was the very first recipient of what is sure to become one of the most prestigious lifetime achievement awards in all of cartooning. Here’s the story: I just finished serving two terms (four years) as president of the NCS. Since I took office I have had multiple people come to me and ask why (insert name of legendary cartoonist) had not been honored with the NCS Milton Caniff Lifetime… READ MORE

Come as See Me at C2E2!

April 23rd, 2015 | Posted in News

I’ll be at C2E2 at McCormick Place South in Artist’s Ally at booth number O16 tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday with my booth babe The Lovely Anna! I’ll be signing stuff, charging outrageous prices for commission drawings and caricatures, hawking copies of my book and limited edition prints (Sherlock and Batman only) as well as some (cheap!) convention exclusives, and ridiculously large and overpriced MAD originals. As always, bring me a cold can of Monster Zero Ultra (white can) and get a free “Alfred as Batman” drawing!   READ MORE

Lucy Sculptor, you got some ‘splainin’ to do!

April 6th, 2015 | Posted in News

I saw a post about a Facebook group lobbying about this this over the weekend, and Mark Evanier mentioned it yesterday on his terrific blog. Now it’s a headline story on CNN. The folks in Celoron, NY, which is Lucille Ball‘s birthplace, want the statue removed because they consider it “ugly” and that it “does not do justice to the “I Love Lucy” star”. Here’s another shot of it: Uhhhh…. I have to say I agree. It is pretty hideous. I don’t think anyone in a million years could identify that as Lucille Ball if not told first it was meant to be her. I… READ MORE
