2010 NCS Reuben Weekend Art

May 1st, 2010 | Posted in News

Click for a closer look… For the last several years I’ve had the honor of doing an illustration for the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Award weekend that they use to adorn the official T-shirt, programs, etc. I usually draw caricatures of the guest speakers and recipients of NCS honors like the Milton Caniff or the Silver T-Square awards amid some scene that has something to do with the location of the event. This year there were a LOT of guest speakers and award recipients, and the Reubens are being held in Jersey City, New Jersey at a hotel on the Hudson overlooking the Manhattan… READ MORE

It’s Almost Here… Free Comic Book Day!

April 29th, 2010 | Posted in News

Yes indeed. This Saturday is the greatly anticipated annual Free Comic Book Day. The first Saturday in May your local comic book shop (most, anyway) give away free comics as part of this great promotion. The idea is to get people into the store to see that comics are still a great source of storytelling entertainment, and hopefully pick up a few new readers along the way. This year’s slate of free comics looks terrific, including familiar faces and some new and unique title ideas. I see the reboot of The Green Hornet from Kevin Smith is one of the lot… I wonder if this… READ MORE

Apple’s At It Again- UPDATED

April 16th, 2010 | Posted in News

NO!! Yes!! Earlier this week editorial cartoonist Mark Fiore was honored with a Pulitzer prize for his work, which in an of itself is historic in that Mark’s work does not appear in print… it’s all on the web at SFGate.com, Slate.com, CBSNews.com, Motherjones.com and NPR’s web site. He’s also making news this week for another reason… one that sounds all too familiar to me. He has submitted an app of his work to Apple for their App Store only to have it rejected for violation of the dreaded “Section 3.3.14” of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement which states: Applications may be rejected if… READ MORE

Mienhardt Raabe, 1915-2010

April 12th, 2010 | Posted in News

Over on Mark Evanier‘s terrific News From ME blog you’ll find this post about the passing away of Mienhardt Raabe, who was one of the last surviving cast members of the Wizard of Oz, specifically of the Munchkins. He played the munchkin coroner. Mr. Raabe was 94. I never met Mr. Raabe but I was honored to have some of my artwork included in a book about his life… a very unique book not only because it told a fascinating tale about a very fascinating man who lived a very fascinating life… of which playing a munchkin in “The Wizard of OZ” was only a… READ MORE

IT’S PETITIONIN’ TIME!!

March 27th, 2010 | Posted in News

©????- (ok… ©Marvel Comics until further notice) Marvel Comic’s superheroes are famous for being different than the typical type because they are written as having to deal with personal and human issues and problems as often as they do the superhuman kind. Apparently Marvel itself is no different. A legal battle is shaping up pitting Marvel Comics and its new parent the Walt Disney Company against the heirs of legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby, who are arguing that a portion of the copyrights to many of Marvel’s most marketable characters belong to their late father and his estate. This is similar in some respects… READ MORE

Shoulder Update: One year Later…

March 26th, 2010 | Posted in News

Before… March 19th, 2008 four months after surgery… Did you think I was kidding??? It has officially been one year and a handful of days since I got my left rotator cuff repaired via arthroscopic surgery. So, here is the latest update.. I am pleased to say I am back in the gym and near 100% again. I still have a lack of strength and stability when my shoulder is in certain positions, but steady rehab and a slow progression into real weightlifting has me doing most exercises pain free as long as I don’t overdo the weight. I am gradually building strength and size… READ MORE

That’s BUNK!

March 20th, 2010 | Posted in News

The Good News is that MAD artist extraordinaire Tom Bunk is having an exhibit of his “METAPHYSICAL QUANTOONS” in the Robert Mayer Zeigt Galerie in Frankfurt, Germany from April 12th – 30th. Check out the gallery’s website for a sneak peek preview. The Bad News is that I do not live in Frankfurt, Germany. For you lucky clods that do or live near enough for a road trip, you can see a whole bunch of Tom’s stunning color work in all their juicy goodness. READ MORE
