Yes, today is the birthday of both legendary “MAD fold-In” creator Al Jaffee and longtime MAD artist and current MAD art director Sam Viviano. This week’s Monday MADness is a look at my art from MAD‘s parody of the TV show “Trading Spaces”, written by Dick DeBartolo in MAD #435, November 2003. Just for fun I did caricatures of some of our neighbors as the “contestants” throughout. That’s the Gerkins in the yellow shorts and the McNeils in the red shirts. As promised in yesterday’s mailbag, here’s a look at the MAD 20 piece I did the art for back in MAD #461, Jan 2006, dealing with the Terri Schiavo story. A quick search showed that I shared this a few years back already, but it deserves a second look. The art I did has a kind of haunted feel to me because of the juxtaposition of the circus images and the tragic depiction of Schiavo in her hospital bed. Back in issue 491 (July 2008), MAD decided to poke a little fun at the idea of “corporate colleges” like McDonald’s “Hamburger University”, and what other corporations might teach at such a school. This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the finished inks for MAD #449’s parody of of the TV show “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” entitled “Lewd & Disorder: Criminal Malcontent” written by Dick DeBartolo, dated Jan 2005. At the time this was one of my favorite pieces I had done for MAD because it was a lot of fun exaggerating the difference in size of the hulking Vincent D’Onofrio and the diminutive Kathryn Erbe. This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the splash page for one of my earliest movie parodies, writer Arnie Kogen‘s send up of Wes Anderson‘s “The Royal Tenenbaums” which appeared in MAD #417, May 2002. It’s has a sentimental place for me because MAD doesn’t parody these kinds of films very often anymore. In fact, after this one the only films I’ve drawn the parody for that did not feature wizards, British spys, robots, tributes, or super-heroes, have been “School of Rock”, “Brokeback Mountain”, “American Sniper” and the recent “Sully”.
