What constitutes my very first MAD job depends on your definition of “first”. Would that be the first thing I was ever assigned to do and then paid for doing it by the magazine? The first thing I ever did that appeared under the MAD brand in any form (i.e. on their website?) or the first thing I did that actually saw print in an issue? Since my Sunday Mailbag yesterday dealt with doing political pieces, here a look at what was probably the most controversial politically-themed job I’ve done for MAD (and there have been a lot of them). I was working on the coloring of this job while on a plane from overseas back to the states, and The Lovely Anna leaned over to tell me I might want to turn off the layer with the sign lettering on it, just in case someone looked over and saw “JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US” fulling my Wacom MobleStudio Pro screen. Well not really lost but not published in MAD either. While MAD did parodies of all three of “The Hobbit” films only two ended up in the magazine. The third was done as an original piece for a special “Loot Crate” edition of MAD. Written by Desmond Devlin, only Loot Crate subscribers (and collectors on eBay) got a copy of this 6 page spoof. In 2004 MAD added a feature called “The Fundalini Pages”, which consisted of short listicles, mini-features, gag cartoons and other quick-read content. I didn’t contribute to the Fundalini Pages much, but I did do the occasional spot illustration. In honor of Father’s Day this one was for a mini-listicle called “Signs Your Dad Loves Football More Than Your Family”. MAD #496, Dec 2008. Writer uncredited. READ MORE

Here’s another sneak peek at a panel from the parody I drew for MAD #8, written by Alec Owen. This one is tough to figure out. It it a parody of the 1971 classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”? Why is Guy Fieri playing Willy Wonka? What’s with the bucket of chicken parts?
