Totally MAD: 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity

July 12th, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

I’m currently in San Diego for Comic-Con, and will post some reports from San Diego in the next few days. MAD just announced this upcoming book, which it is debuting at Comic-Con (I am not sure what that means . . . maybe they have an advanced copy or some other sneak peek . . . I’ll let you know). I am told I have a fair number of pieces in it: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:¬¨‚Ć Time Home Entertainment Inc. and¬¨‚Ć MAD Magazine Announce Totally MAD: 60 Years of Humor, Satire, Stupidity and Stupidity Foreword by Stephen Colbert and Eric Drysdale¬¨‚Ć Includes “The Soul of MAD,”A… READ MORE

San Diego Comic-Con Schedule

July 9th, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Hard to believe the San Diego Comic-Con is at the end of this week. I’ll be there again this year, but I will not have my own booth. That experiment did not go as well as I’d hoped last year. It was fun to have my own space, but the location wasn’t great and it took a lot of work to sell enough stuff just to pay the booth fee before there was any profit being made. This year I will be at the National Cartoonists Society booth (#1307/1309) much of the time, and will have posted, scheduled hours at the booth as to when… READ MORE

A Man of (MAD) Letters

July 2nd, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

In this clip from a local Sacramento morning show, this guy explains how he considers having a letter printed in MAD to be one of the highlights of his life. I’m surprised having a letter printed in MAD didn’t get him expelled from school! READ MORE

Doug Gilford’s MAD Sites

June 22nd, 2012 | Posted in General

If you are a fan of MAD magazine, either past or present, you would behoove yourself to make a regular habit of visiting Doug Gilford‘s MAD cover site. Doug is a great supporter and fan of MAD, and has dedicated a lot of time an effort in cataloging and tracking all things MAD. Not only does he have scans of every MAD cover ever, he has complete lists of the tables of contents of every issue, an exhaustive compiling of every appearance by a MAD contributor (here’s mine), a list of every TV and movie satire that’s ever appeared in the magazine, updated MAD news… READ MORE

Photographer and author of The Artist Within Greg Preston set up this awesome photoshoot of the attending MAD artists and writers (plus a couple of gorgeous models) in a 60’s MAD MEN setting. Of course, this is what it always looks like when the Usual Gang of Idiots gets together. I still pinch… READ MORE

About TV Parodies in MAD

June 14th, 2012 | Posted in General

A couple of days ago I mentioned here on Tom’s MAD Blog that I did the art for a parody of the TV show “Breaking Bad” in the latest issue of MAD. Reader Anthony wrote in the comments: Breaking Bad satire?? YAAAAY! Best show, cannot wait to see this. Hey with the satires of big drama serials, do you watch the whole series so far or just the most recent season? The cast and locations change a bit over the course of the four seasons. That’s a good question, and really begs a little examination of how I approach a TV or movie parody in… READ MORE

As promised, a small peek at the art from MAD‘s satire of Breaking Bad in this month’s issue: Final splash- Clicky to Embiggen Pencil Roughs- Clicky to Embiggen A few random panels from the parody: Last week I was asked about the process in doing TV parodies, and if I had to watch every single episode of the series or just the last season or what. I thought that might make an interesting article, so look for that on Thursday after tomorrow’s SotW. READ MORE
