MAD’s Editor-in-Chimp, John Ficarra Popmatters.com just posted a really insightful interview with MAD VP & Executive Editor John Ficarra (and yes, that is a bit of an oxymoron). All joking aside…and some would say MAD does that regularly…the article really examines how MAD has changed with the times, some of the thought processes behind the magazine’s approach to humor in the 21st century, and a look behind the scenes at some of the features in MAD #424. It’s actually one of the best looks into the magazine’s inner workings I’ve read in a long time… John must have had an intern do it. Speaking of… READ MORE

Clicky to Embiggen… Uproxx.com has an exclusive first look (I know… big deal!) of the splash page for the parody I did along with writer Desmond Devlin of the movie “Man of Steel”. The sneak peek includes a look at MAD‘s long history of lampooning Superman, starting with ‘Superduperman” in MAD #4. You’ll have to click the link to read the intro text to get the gag behind the title. After the issue is released on Oct. 23rd, I’ll post a few more panels from the parody. Seven pages! READ MORE

As promised, here are a couple of panels from “Ho-Hum Land” appearing in the latest issue of MAD. written by David Shayne. And in case you missed it, here’s the splash: Clicky to embiggen… As I mentioned briefly before, this particular piece has a special significance for me, since it represents the 100th issue of MAD my work has appeared in. My first appearance was in issue #399 back in October of 2000, and since then I’ve had work in all but 25 of the subsequent 124 issues. That magic #100 should be updated sometime soon on Mike Slaubaugh’s MAD lists page. According to Mike’s… READ MORE

Clicky to Embiggen… MTV Geek posted a sneak peek of the splash page to MAD‘s parody of “Homeland”, words by David Shayne, art by me. I’ll be able to post more of a peek at the rest of the parody once the issue’s release date gets closer. Sharped-witted MAD fans (BTW, that phrase appears in the Oxford English dictionary as the definition of “oxymoron”) might have noticed that despite the fact that MAD is published bi-monthly, issue #523 is coming out only one month after July’s #522 hit the stands. This is because the June release of the Superman Special delayed #522 (which should have… READ MORE

MAD posted a much bigger version of the cover art today, so all is right with the world. Of course, if you REALLY want to get a good look at the cover art, and any other furshlugginer garbage within its pages, go out at BUY THE ISSUE when it comes out August 27th…. clod. READ MORE

POLITICO has a small (and I mean TINY) sneak peek of the Mark Fredrickson cover art for MAD #523, coming out in just a few weeks. This cover is interesting to me for a number of reasons: This is the first cover of MAD (not counting specials, etc) where the Spies are the main focus of the gag. The Spies have been on a few covers as parts of montage images, borders, etc. It’s one of the very few without Alfred as part of the main gag (they snuck him into the “O” on the lower headline) I got to see part of the cover… READ MORE

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at a special event honoring a very special man. “From the Beginning: Jack Davis” was an exhibit of the work of the great cartoonist, caricaturist, and humorous illustrator at a terrific little gallery called the Glynn Art Association in Jack’s adopted hometown of St. Simons Island on coastal Georgia. Jack is easily one of the most beloved and honored cartoonists of the last century, but this exhibit was extra-special because it was organized and hosted by a local gallery… and it really opened the eyes of his neighbors as to who Jack really is.… READ MORE
