Here’s the first of the final caricatures for my new Limited Edition print “Men of Steel”… Kirk Alyn. As with my other prints, the concept is a look at the different actors who have played a single, fictional character on television or film. So far I’ve done James Bond, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and Batman. New for 2015: a look at the actors who have portrayed Superman. My rules for inclusion: First, they have to have appeared on screen in TV or film as the character in a production that centers on the character. Hard to believe that San Diego Comic-Con starts one week from tomorrow! I’m already gearing up for the event. This year will be very different for me, as I will have my own booth! My booth number is I-02, which is located back to back with the great Sergio Aragonés, so it will be a very MAD place to be. Since I have my own space, I will not be at the NCS booth at all this year. Q: Recently you changed your working process and now you are doing your pencil sketches for mad parodies just digitally. Is this now your favorit method for all sketches? And I think your inks are still real inks. Do you print out your digital sketches and ink over them? Can you give some details and pros and cons of your new working process? Wow, two blog posts headlines in German in a row? The reason behind this one is not as pleasant as yesterdays. Right now The Munich Comic Festival is going on in, you guessed it, Munich, Germany. This year they are giving their lifetime achievement award, called the “Peng!” to MAD artist Tom Bunk… a very deserving and fantastic cartoonist. The frestival is the second largest of its kind in Germany, and boasts a lot of publishers in a huge book fair, professional comics artists doing workshops and signing autographs/sketching, and various presentations and lectures on the artform and the industry. One of the highlights of the NCS Reuben Weekend was the cake we had made as part of the King Features 100th Anniversary celebration last Friday. Fans of the Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” show know Duff Goldman and his team of pastry artists at Charm City Cakes. Since the 2015 Reuben Awards Weekend was in nearby Washington D.C., we decided to pay Charm City Cakes a visit in Baltimore with an eye on having a cake made honoring King Feature’s Centennial. Here is the gigantically disappointing reason behind my series of caricatures of all 44 U.S. Presidents: The Lovely Anna framed all the originals and used them as the centerpieces for the tables at the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards banquet last night. Each table was the “President’s Table”, with the corresponding number for each president, my caricature, a beautiful vase with blossoms, and a hand painted box with the years of the president’s term(s) written on it. The last few Decembers I have been part of a group of fellow cartoonists that have traveled to the beautiful city of Boise, ID to help raise money for a wonderful organization called the Wyakin Warriors Foundation. The WW supports wounded U.S. soldiers by not just paying for their post-service education, but by supporting them in every meaningful way to give them the tools to complete their education and get jobs in their fields. According to recent statistics, only 10% of wounded veterans manage to finish school after leaving the service. The WW graduation rate? 100%.
