Q: On Monday you mentioned in your post that Dave Berg was one of “many” classic MAD artists you never got to meet. Who have you met, and who are the ones you most wish you had? A: Back when I first got started with MAD in 2000 they still had an annual holiday party at the Society of Illustrators in NYC. My second LA workshop is underway! Here’s the class illustration. I still have one spot newly opened up in my Dallas Workshop, taking place March 9-11th, only two spots left in the Chicago Workshop (April 20-22nd) and only 3 spots left in the NYC Workshop (May 4-6th). Here’s my annual “what kind of ________ do you use?” post, updated to 2018. Any links are just one possible source for purchase, do some web searching and you are bound to find the same things elsewhere and possibly cheaper. In the Studio For doing my publication work I use a lot of different tools and materials. While most of what I do these days is digital I do occasionally, when the job calls for it, pull out the old paints and such. The startup comic book company I recently did some work for, Sitcomics, is getting some press for both the “Binge Book” format of their comics and how they are trying to buck the standard comic book distribution system with what they call “sell-through distribution”. Bleedingcool has a write-up as does The Outhousers. Sitcomics publisher and main writer Darin Henry wanted to do something different with his comic book lineup. Coming from a background as a successful TV writer (Futurama, Seinfeld, The Ellen Show, etc) he is applying today’s new dynamic of TV consumption to comics. I’m currently working on my first job for the new MAD staff, and part of this project requires me to recreate the look/style of another cartoonist. MAD does this sort of thing quite often, having lampooned comic strips, comic books, book illustrators, and other visual artists over the years requiring one of their artists to “ape” the look of another artist to pull off the parody. Doing a perfect copy of the style of another artist isn’t exactly the goal with a parody.
