I finally found a venue and a way to make a workshop in Amsterdam work, so it’s officially on for June 22-23rd, 2019 at the fabulous DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station, right in the heart of Amsterdam!! This will be a little different than my usual workshops. I found it VERY expensive to book a space in Amsterdam, so I have reduced the number of days from 2 1/2 (Friday afternoon, Sat and Sun) to only the weekend. As promised, here’s a look at the splash page of the parody of “A Christmas Story” in MAD #5, written by the Grinchy Desmond Devlin. You just might be seeing more parodies of classic or cult movies now and again in the pages of MAD. Way back in February I posted a rare link to a Kickstarter campaign for a book that was to celebrate the art of “live” caricature, meaning the kind that s done in quick fashion from a live model at a theme park, fair, festival, event or on the street. The brainchild of artist Manny Avetisyan , “The Ultimate Guide to Modern Live Caricature” features multiple caricatures of the different subjects that show the incredible diversity of the artform. EDIT: Well that did not take too long. I’ve afraid all 15 spots are spoken for. My apologies if you did not get a chance to get one. I usually do not do this sort of thing outside of comic book conventions, and even then I only do these full color brush pen and Copic marker illustrations on the blank MAD sketch covers (which are much smaller than this). However just for the holidays I’m making 15 of these personal caricature commissions available. I’ve been working on trying to get a workshop scheduled in Amsterdam on June 21-23, and it is proving to be very problematic. Mostly it is the outrageous costs of the meeting space and hotels in the area. I will certainly have to charge quite a bit more for the class, although thanks to the per person fees lunch will be included every day as well as coffee, tea, snack breaks, sweets, fruit, croissants, etc. They put on a good event, but it’s expensive.
