2020 NCS Reuben Awards Art

March 3rd, 2020 | Posted in General

After a couple of years off I was asked to do the artwork for the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Awards Weekend again this year. The event will be in Kansas City (the one in Missouri… you know, where the Superbowl Champion Chiefs are located). The speaker lineup is ridiculous and several people are getting big awards for their contributions to the world of cartooning. Counter clockwise from the bottom left: Georgia Dunn (Breaking Cat News), Jim Davis (some another cat comic), Mark Tatulli (Lio, Heart of the City, Desmond Puckett, etc), Maria Scrivan (Half Full, Nat Enough), Terri Libenson (The Pajama Diaries, Emmie books),… READ MORE

Art for Dummies

February 27th, 2020 | Posted in General

I’ve done quite a bit of artwork for superstar ventriloquist Jeff Dunham over the years. A lot of it has been for merchandise like T-shirts, etc. but I have occasionally done concept work on possible new characters for his act. This is one of two “Hot Rod” illustrations I did for him, both with a big nod to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and the “Rat Fink” vibe. A few years ago I was drawing at my theme park operation at Valleyfair here in Minnesota when I couple sat down wearing Jeff Dunham tour T-Shirts. I had happened to have done the art for both shirts.… READ MORE

Russ Cochran: 1937-2020

One of the most important people in the world of MAD and E.C. Comics that you’ve probably never heard of passed away this past Sunday. Russ Cochran was a publisher and comics archivist whose love of the comics medium allowed later generations access to, and the subsequent enjoyment of, the legendary EC Comics line, including MAD. Russ published reprint collections of a number of terrific classic comics, but it was his The Complete EC Library that most people associate as his greatest endeavor. Over the course of 18 years starting in 1978, he published almost every EC comic in 66 hardbound volumes contained in 17… READ MORE

My Start in Caricature

February 18th, 2020 | Posted in General

I got this as a mailbag question not so long ago: Tom, have you ever written about how you got into caricaturing? When you realized this was something you could do? I used to draw cartoon characters when I was about 5, but that’s about as far as I got…LOL. If you haven’t, or if you have, maybe you could repeat it. – David Lubin, Tampa FL I thought this to be a bit too long a story for a Sunday Mailbag, so I left it for a regular post. Feel free to bail out when you get bored… People sometimes ask what got me… READ MORE
