NCC Chapter Meeting: Saturday Oct. 7th

October 10th, 2006 | Posted in General

It was a full day of events for the North Central Chapter on Saturday. We started by attending the FallCon comic book convention, organized by the Midwest Comic Book Association. The MCBA crew were enthusiastic about our appearance there, and set aside a lot of table space for chapter attendees. They were very hospitable and we were welcomed with open arms and a free taco bar. Dave Phipps and Michael Jantze man the tables at FallCon Michael signs a book for a fan Cedric Hohnstadt does a sketch for another fan I’m thinking about the free taco bar while Dave thinks I am listening to… READ MORE

EyeToons Cartoon Show Reception

October 9th, 2006 | Posted in General

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design were gracious hosts for the cartoon art show that opened last Friday, and coincided with our NCC meeting this weekend. Several of the cartoonists attending the meeting were on hand Friday for the opening reception. The space was great and the presentation terrific. MCAD and in particular Kristin Makholm, the MCAD Director of Gallery and Exhibition Programs really knocked themselves out to corral this stack of original cartoon art from all over central USA and turn it into a classy looking show (as classy as you can get with anything from MAD included). Here are some pictures of… READ MORE

AWOL

October 7th, 2006 | Posted in General

I had all intentions of posting pictures today from last night’s gala show opening at MCAD. “eyeToons: The Work of the North Central Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society” did indeed open and it is a small but very well put together show. Unfortunatley I left my camera in my car and one of our members volunteered to take pictures for me and e-mail them… but I didn’t get them last night as I had wanted. So, today I will get them and on Monday we’ll have a monster entry about the show opening, today’s chapter appearance at the FallCon comic book convention and our… READ MORE

Cartoonist Society Chapter Meeting in Minnesota this Weekend

October 6th, 2006 | Posted in General

Back in July I wrote this post about the annual meeting of my chapter of the National Cartoonists Society, which is taking place here in Minneapolis/St. Paul. St. Cloud cartoonist David Phipps, local Twin Cities illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt and I did the on location organizing for the event. The turnout of members is disappointingly small, but those of us that will be participating are in for a great program. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design really got on board with the meeting, hosting not only our main speakers but a 2 week plus gallery exhibit of original cartoons and humorous illustration. Most of the… READ MORE

Is “LOST” Getting Lost?

October 5th, 2006 | Posted in General

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead. Do not read if you do not want to know details of the season premiere of ABC’s “LOST” I watched the season premiere of “LOST” last night. I’m still digesting it, but I am sorry to say I didn’t come away too excited about the next episodes. Maybe I’m expecting too much, and one episode into the season is way too early to see where it’s going, but I am getting worried that LOST is getting lost itself in it’s never-ending peeling of a layer to reveal another layer storytelling. I’m concerned that this ship is sailing in undeniably interesting waters but… READ MORE

2006 NCN Convention Report

October 3rd, 2006 | Posted in General

I’m back from my very brief trip to Orlando which included a quick visit to the NCN convention, which had just gotten started yesterday. It’s too bad the one day I was able to pop in was day number one, as the walls had very little art on them even as late as I hung out last night. By Wednesday night this giant conference room will be overflowing with thousands of caricatures on every available wall space. I snapped a few pictures late Monday (technically early Tuesday) but all I could get was people working. Pictures below. I’ve been to seven conventions, and they get… READ MORE

Off to Orlando, Etc.

October 2nd, 2006 | Posted in General

Despite last week’s computer disaster I am still leaving today to go to Orlando for a very short visit. The actual reason is park related business but I managed to coincide the business part with the NCN convention so I could pop in and see some good friends. I’ll take some pictures and post them tomorrow, but since it’s so early in the week there will not be much art up on the walls. I’ll be having dinner with two of my favorite people, talented caricaturist and cartoonist Keelan Parham and his lovely wife Barbie. Should be fun and I could use the breather. I… READ MORE

Orphan Works Update

September 30th, 2006 | Posted in General

You’ve seen me write in this space about the proposed legislation that would radically alter copyright law in a way that would be a disaster for creative professionals. Congress was scheduled to adjourn this session yesterday and it looks like the bill did not make it out of committee. That’s good. What’s bad is there are still some legislators set on getting this thing passed. I cannot see a single benefit for anyone except companies and publishers that formerly had to buy the rights to use illustrations, photos, books or other creative works and can now use them for free if they cannot find the… READ MORE
