A while ago I wrote this post about an informal competition I was helping judge on the National Caricaturist’s Network forum. In brief, the participating artists were to design and illustrate a MAD Magazine cover with the subject being Sylvester Stallone‘s new movie, Rocky Balboa. The competition is over, and there were many good entries. Everybody worked hard on their pieces, and choosing a winner wasn;t easy. Anna and I returned home from the 2002 NCS Reuben awards after having a great time as always. Held on Memorial Day weekend in Cancun, Mexico, the event that year featured a lot of laying around the pool and meeting other cartoonists, playing water-volleyball, swimming up to the sunken bar (a lot) and general fun in the sun activities. Anna’s more than a bit of a shutterbug, so a week or so later she came home with fat envelopes full of developed pictures for her to scrapbook with. I read in my friend Cedric Hohnstadt‘s blog a few days ago that he received an early Christmas present from his wife: a DVD of the newly released Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. He writes a synopsis of the differences and his brief thoughts on the film. I also got that DVD as an early present from my wife (comic book geek’s wives just get it, don’t they?). I watched it the other night while working on upgrading Anna‘s computer. For those not familiar with the story, Richard Donner was the director of the original Superman: The Movie film. A good friend convinced me that selling this artwork for the song I was asking was a disservice. Maybe it will never be sellable for much more than I was asking, but it is worth more to me.??ᬨ‚Ć I guess the after market for pages from MAD isn’t worth much if your last name isn’t Drucker, Davis, Wood or similar… or more accurately if you aren’t in the same league as those guys.??ᬨ‚Ć Of course, who is? Last night was the first night I actually watched an episode of Heroes at air time. Well, it was an hour after it actually aired, but close enough. Looks like my Monday nights will be booked for the foreseeable future… thanks a lot, Tim Kring! Really… thanks. This show is a gem. It’s riddled with interesting and deep characters, and unlike Lost it is not afraid to actually advance the plot in leaps and bounds. Several jobs in the works right now at various stages. Here are some sketches and pencils: Workplace Poster This is a fun one… lot’s going on. It’s always nice to do something that doesn’t involves caricatures so I can break out into a more cartoony and higher energy style of drawing. On a side note I started watching the TV show Entourage on HBO. There are some great faces there and I couldn’t resist doing some studies: Kevin Dillon has a great face to draw! One of the benefits of being a member of the National Caricaturists Network is that you have access to their excellent member’s only forum. This is a terrific place to interact with fellow caricaturists from all over the world, get feedback on your work, find and give advice on the business of caricature, network with other artists and artist/agents and in general just have fun gabbing and posting artwork. The highest honor the NCN bestows is the “Caricaturist of the Year” award, otherwise known as the “Golden Nosey“.
