Blasts From The Past

February 1st, 2008 | Posted in General

Yesterday in his terrific blog, fellow Minnesota illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt reposted an older article he had placed on his blog some time ago. The explanation for this “reprint” was that his blog’s traffic had increased dramatically recently, and most readers would not have seen this post… and presumably many others as well. That got me thinking… I often get e-mails or questions pertaining to topics I have already discussed or posted about, and it occurred to me that Cedric’s observation about increased traffic and newer visitors was probably the reason. One bad thing about posting something every day is that the MAD Blog Archives are… READ MORE

Goodbye to Maui…

January 26th, 2008 | Posted in General

The view at lunch from “The Sea House” in Napili Another annual trip to Maui in the books. We’ll be having our yearly going-away lunch on the ocean at Kimo’s in Lahaina, staring wistfully out at the whales frolicking in the sea and contemplating our return to real life. Finding the time, money and needed help for just the two of us to get away alone one week a year is not easy. However I can say for certain that it is very important to your marriage and your sanity to find some selfish alone time with your spouse. The trappings, responsibilities and aggravation of… READ MORE

Doing Licensed Property Art

January 25th, 2008 | Posted in General

Fellow caricaturist Mike Giblin posted a query on the NCN Forum the other day asking about how one goes about working on licensed property art… like Disney or Looney Tunes or similar. I wrote a long response based on my limited personal experience and what I’ve heard of that side of cartooning from some experienced artists. I thought I’d share it here: About licensed property artwork: The only licensed property work I ever did was when I drew “Married with Children” and “The Coneheads” comics way back in the day, and that was different than your traditional licensing for merchandise. However I do know an… READ MORE

Off on Vacation, Etc.

The Lovely Anna and I are off today on our annual week away from kids, work and the Minnesota winter. We have a timeshare on Maui, and spend one very relaxing week sleeping in, reading books, sitting by the pool or the sea and eating at some excellent restaurants. This is our time to charge our parental and professional batteries, and take a little selfish me time in order that we do not go crazy and beat our kids, the neighbors or a few art directors I know. Fear not, gentle reader… through the magic of pre-posting and wifi The MAD Blog will continue it’s… READ MORE

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles- A Review

January 14th, 2008 | Posted in General

Okay this is a little creepy… Writer’s strike or not, it looks like NBC’s The Bionic Woman is in total system failure. I wrote about the show after it’s premiere, basically saying there might be promise but I would have to wait and see. Who knew the mediocre first episode would be the best one, and it would be all downhill from there? I wanted to like the show, but between horrible miscasting and even worse writing it needs to get it’s bionic plug pulled. Rumors have been flying about it’s cancellation while it is on hiatus during the writer’s strike, but unless they can… READ MORE

Surf’s Up Dept.

January 12th, 2008 | Posted in General

This Saturday’s “Surf’s Up Dept.” is very MAD video-centric, with a few other stories tossed in. Revenge of the Mommy Dept. Des Moines mom Jane Hambleton proclaimed herself the “Meanest Mom on the Planet” when she sold her son’s car through the want ads of the Des Moines Register after finding alcohol under the seat of the vehicle. The ad read: OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don’t love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet. Hambleton was then… READ MORE
