The Lovely Anna Speaks

September 4th, 2008 | Posted in General

My husband Tom asked me to do him a favor. This is not unusual, most days, at least once, I get a request for a favor. Usually it’s to help with paper work, run to the bank or post office, or deliver supplies to one of our booths. Being that I can’t draw or even ink the boxes for his MAD pages, (Yes, this was attempted and I failed miserably) I try to help out where and when I can. Anything so that he can keep working on the deadline. Today’s favor had to do with The MAD Blog. He is trying to finish up… READ MORE

Happy Day After Labor Day

September 2nd, 2008 | Posted in General

This is a holiday that you will find on no official calendar, but it’s one all theme park caricaturists adore. Read that last link if you don’t understand… you need to spend at least one entire summer sweating out on the midway drawing endless lines of snot nosed kids, vain teenagers, drunk couples and surly art critics in order to get it fully. As a theme park concession owner, that goes double for me. Yesterday I was ultimately responsible for 12 art concession locations in three states with a combined work force of about 60 artists. Today… Nada. Nothing. Zero. Oh, except I have a… READ MORE

From the Freelance Files

August 28th, 2008 | Posted in General

Here’s another of those oddball advertising jobs that come along, you do them and get paid for them, but they never get produced or used in the way intended. This project was done a few years ago for an ad agency. They wanted a “superhero” team designed in a style somewhat reminiscent of the Bruce Timm animated look for some ad campaign pitch to Canon, the photocopy/consumer electronics company. I got the job via referral from a fellow illustrator. I needed to design 5 heroes, two of which were a hero/sidekick combo. I honestly don’t remember the exact details but the leader of the group… READ MORE

Holy Lemon Law, Batman!

As long as we are on the subject of Batman movies… If you happen to have an extra $110,000 laying about, head over to eBayландшафт and bid on this ’89 Batmobile. The seller describes it as one of the 5 original cars built for the Tim Burton 1989 film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. From the interior it sure looks authentic… there are a few batmobiles of this type about that were built for Six Flag’s stuntshows but the interior of those were minimal with a space for a hidden driver to make the car appear like it was remote controlled. I’ve always loved… READ MORE

What’s Playing in the Studio

August 19th, 2008 | Posted in General

It’s been a while since I posted about the audiobooks I often enjoy, or at least listen to, while working at certain stages of a project in the studio. I’ve mentioned before that I only listen to audiobooks when I am inking or painting, and only then to books I have already read or am very familiar with. This is because at the rough/layout/pencil stages of a project there is too much concentration and thinking needed to pay any attention at all to an audiobook story. Even when I am at the inking and coloring stages, I cannot listen to a book that I have… READ MORE

The Dreaded Deadline Demon

August 18th, 2008 | Posted in General

It’s not really a deadline keeping me from posting today, but just all the catch up I need to do after my very short trip to New England to visit my Six Flags park. It amounts to the same, however… READ MORE

More New Samples

August 8th, 2008 | Posted in General

I also had a little down time at the theme park on Monday to do two new samples for the display wall. Again, these are based on previous “Sketch o’the Week” drawings and are executed in graphite/freehand airbrush in a manner that is consistent with what customers can expect to see if they get a caricature: The similar head and body angle is just coincidence. I wouldn’t want to hang these samples next to one another for that reason. READ MORE
