The Lovely Anna and I are in New York City this weekend to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary (actually that’s not officially until Wednesday) and to see the Brendt Toast Gang’s art show featuring the work of a long time and very good friend, Ed Steckley. Ed is a very talented illustrator and cartoonist, as well as being one of the best live caricaturists I have ever seen… and that’s saying something as I have seen some thousands of them. He does a lot of storyboard work for commercials that you have probably seen on TV, as well as publication work including a piece in… READ MORE

Almost Live from Cali Colombia

In an odd coincidence just hours before I learned of the passing of Ismael Roldan, I was reminded of his being instrumental in making it possible for me to visit Colombia last summer when Colombian television reporter and personality Cristina Valencia emailed me a link to the above video. The video features her story on the 15 Sal??n Internacional de Historietas y Caricaturas Calicomix 2009 (15th Annual International Exhibition of Cartoons and Caricatures Calicomix 2009) where I was a guest speaker back in June. It’s in spanish of course but my interview section is in English with Spanish subtitles at around minute 4:15. There are… READ MORE

Ismael Roldan: R.I.P.- en espa?±ol

Mi amigo Luis Edwardo Leon was kind enough to translate both my post about Ismael’s passing and the Exaggerated Features interview with him into Spanish: He recibido una noticia terrible hoy en d??a. READ MORE

Happy Day After Labor Day

Today is my favorite holiday of the year. This is a holiday that you will find on no official calendar, but it’s one all seasonal theme park caricaturists adore. Read that last link if you don’t understand… you need to spend at least one entire summer sweating out on the midway drawing endless lines of snot nosed kids, vain teenagers, drunk couples and surly art critics in order to get it fully. As a theme park concession owner, that goes double for me. Yesterday I was ultimately responsible for 12 art concession locations in three states with a combined work force of about 60 artists.… READ MORE

A Batman by any other name…

September 7th, 2009 | Posted in General

If I had to credit one thing for being the reason for my getting interested in comics, cartooning etc. as a kid it would have to be the 60’s Batman TV show. It was in early reruns when I was a little kid, my having been born in 1966 the year it was first on prime-time television. Like so many kids of that era, I spent a lot of time running around the neighborhood with an old bath towel pinned around my neck and a cardboard batarang in my hand… The difference is I still run around the neighborhood occasionally with a cape and a… READ MORE

Most Bizarre Copyright Infringement Ever

An alert e-mailer sent me this link to an online seller offering this “collector stamp sheet” from the Democratic Republic of Congo: … which is¬¨‚Ć a rip off of this VERY old park sample of Scully and Mulder from “The X-Files” that I had on my original website back in 1996: Actually I’ve known about these Congo stamps for years. They surfaced around 2000 or so and featured about half a dozen of my caricature samples, apparently taken from my website, as well as caricatures by a number of other artists. There was a small country in Russia that did the same thing. Apparently there… READ MORE

I know I promised the “Nose” tutorial today and it’s almost done but due to a scheduling snafu at my parks I will instead be drawing live caricatures at Nickelodeon Universe today. Rest assured, the tutorial will be up and running early tomorrow. Oh… and I have had a request from a few people to post in advance when I will be drawing caricatures at one of my park locations. I will be drawing at Valleyfair here in Minnesota this Saturday, Sept. 5th from 12-8 at our location near the “Wild Thing” roller coaster. READ MORE

Return of the Revenge of the Son of the Caricature Demo Video

August 27th, 2009 | Posted in General

Here is yet another of the time lapse demo caricatures from the 1993 retail sales video. This one is of “All in the Family” star Carroll O’Connor. I’m not sure how many people under 35 will know who this is… I don’t think “All in the Family” gets a lot of syndication time on TV these days. It was a famous and groundbreaking show in it’s day.
