One Weird Project

May 6th, 2010 | Posted in General

Click for a closer look… I wasn’t going to post about this job until I finished up a second similar commission for a friend and colleague who has been patiently waiting for me to do his painting for so long it is just plain embarrassing, but considering a number of people have e-mailed and Facebooked me about it since Al twittered (tweeted?) a picture of the art I might as well tell the story. That other long LONG overdue original is almost done anyway. I was contacted by the brilliant greeting card/illustrator/author/cartoonist Sandra Boynton a couple of months back about doing a private commission for… READ MORE

The Dreaded Deadline Demon

Sorry Folks, but Wednesday’s “Sketch o’the Week” is going to have to turn into Thursday’s “Sketch o’the Week” this week. No time today as I have burned all my midnight oil and then some, and am still going on a late job. READ MORE

May the Fourth be with You!

Today is my birthday… 44 years old. Yikes. Time does fly by. I don’t feel a day over 48. So what am I going to do on my birthday? Why, work of course! Sadly I got behind on a MAD job that is desperately needing to be done so I will be working on it all day. However, tonight The Lovely Anna and all four of my kids will be taking me to the ballgame at the shiny new Target Field where we will (hopefully) watch our Minnesota Twins beat the snot out of the Detroit Tigers. I will also be ignoring my diet for… READ MORE

A Rare Gig

April 30th, 2010 | Posted in General

Images courtesy Jeff Mandell Last Saturday I traveled to the lovely town of Storm Lake, Iowa and drew caricatures at a rare gig with Florida based caricaturist and illustrator Jeff “Talltoon” Mandell. Jeff is enormously talented and a true visionary in the field of caricature and marketing… he had the foresight back in the infancy of the internet to register the URL www.caricature.com, and has been a pioneer in the world of live digital caricatures as well as the traditional method (i.e. drawing on dead trees) which is what we practiced at Buena Vista University. Jeff draws at corporate events, trade shows, colleges and functions… READ MORE

Speaking of copyright infringement… these pictures were sent to me by my friend Julio Cesar Maranjo Marin, a terrific cartoonist from Colombia I met last summer when I visited Cali to speak at a cartoonist’s event: Click for a closer look… This restaurant is right down the street from where Julio works. The mural is covered with lifted caricatures… I believe the Batman one was done by Ben Burgraff. I’m not sure about the Marx Bros., Marilyn, Bogart (? or maybe Warren Beatty?) or the Mona Lisa with the black eye. The rest are all old ones of mine. Absolutely no point to this post,… READ MORE

Sweeping out the Street (Artists)?

April 24th, 2010 | Posted in General

I’ve blogged now and again about the unethical practices of some (that’s SOME, not ALL) street caricature artists who steal the work of others from books or the Internet and display them as if they were their own. I’d like that practice to go away, but I certainly wouldn’t want to see this happen: New York Seeks Limits on Art Vendors in Parks According to the linked article from the New York Times, NYC’s Park and Recreations Dept. has proposed to limit the “number of vendors allowed in parts of Central Park and all of Union Square Park, Battery Park and the High Line… READ MORE

Animated MAD

April 22nd, 2010 | Posted in General

Back a few months ago I wrote a post about a brightening future for MAD, citing that I knew about a few endeavors on the horizon that boded well for introducing MAD to a whole new audience, but couldn’t talk about quite yet. Yesterday’s announcement of a new MAD animated series on the Cartoon Network was one of the things I was referring to. I can’t say more because the details about the production of the show and how it will incorporate MAD features is still confidential. Regardless the announcement is great news for MAD. I’ll share more as I am allowed. Here is the… READ MORE

More Jack Davis!

April 19th, 2010 | Posted in General

Jack Davis is not only an alum of the University of Georgia, but he’s been drawing the Georgia “Bulldawg” for them for a long, long time. The above video is from the university’s Bulldawg Illustrated, which no doubt has been frequently illustrated by Jack. The video is a gem not just because they talk with Jack, but it shows him banging out a drawing of the Bulldawg at his drawing table overlooking the river. Check out the way he holds his pencil! We are also treated to seeing him ink with a brush and do a quick color wash job on it. Great thanks… READ MORE
