The Art of the Cereal Box

April 5th, 2011 | Posted in General

Yesterday’s nostalgic post about kid’s breakfast cereals, and some of the comments, got me thinking about how influential the art on cereal boxes have been over the years in the world of cartooning. I did a quick internet search looking for a book on the subject, but it appears there is none. There is an out of print 1995 book called Cerealizing America: The Unsweetened Story of American Breakfast Cereal by Scott Bruce and Bill Crawford, but I have no idea if it’s centralized on the cartoon character angle.¬¨‚Ć Somebody needs to do a “The Art of the Cereal Box” coffee table book. Not Just for Breakfast Anymore…

This link on Mark Evanier‘s excellent blog about the most terrible (or awesome) breakfast cereals got me thinking about the oddity that is the American breakfast cereal. First, the fact that 95% of all breakfast cereals are about as far from what anyone would consider a good thing to eat for breakfast as it’s possible to be. I know there are plenty of breakfast cereals that really ARE good for you… high in fiber and with natural vitamins and minerals… but as a kid I hated that crap. I wanted the sugary stuff, man! The kind of cereals I liked probably had less nutritional value… READ MORE

TODAY on The Cartoonist Studio

March 29th, 2011 | Posted in General

A few months back the website The Cartoonist Studio put together a media press release about their official launch, and tapped a few of the cartoonists on the site to do a drawing for one of the recipients. I did this little spot illustration for the packet that went to The TODAY Show. If you haven’t visited The Cartoonist Studio, you should. It’s a virtual tour of the studios and work of (currently) 23 professional cartoonists including those working in editorial cartooning, comic strips, illustration, gag cartooning, greeting cards, etc. It’s fun to see the faces and places behind some work you are sure to… READ MORE

Q: With freelancing for magazines and stuff, is there a time of year that is always busier than others? Is there one that is slower? If so, why? A: I’ve noticed over the years that the first few months of the year and October were busier than others, and November/December were always the slowest months when it came to getting freelance illustration jobs. The discrepancy was obvious enough that I finally asked one of my art directors why that might be. He told me it was all about budgets. Most magazines and periodicals operate under budgets for things like illustration, freelance writing, etc. They get… READ MORE

Stranded…

…in Phoenix for almost 48 hours on our way back from vacation. Thanks to mechanical problems with our flight out of Hawaii and a 3 hour delay there we missed our connection out of Phoenix to Minneapolis. Thanks to the winter storms back home and hundreds of canceled flights in and out of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the earliest flight back home for us was the red-eye at 12:55 am… TUESDAY. In the immortal words of Alfred E. Neuman: “ECCCCHHHH!” READ MORE
