The Reuben

May 29th, 2012 | Posted in General

I’ve finally got a few minutes to breathe now that the 2012 NCS Reuben Awards Weekend is over and my duties as president and host for the event are (mostly) over. We are headed back home today . . . in fact I am writing this at 32,000 feet on my way back to Minnesota. It was a great weekend and I am proud of how it turned out. The Lovely Anna literally worked herself sick, had no voice left at all on Monday and was an incredible hostess. Actually winning the Reuben for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year”? Shocked, stunned, speechless, floored . .… READ MORE

The 66th Annual NCS Reuben Awards

May 28th, 2012 | Posted in General

Whew. What a weekend. The Reubens are always a great time, getting a chance meet and chat with both your long-time heroes in cartooning and cartoonists you’ve never met before. It was a thrill to see the great Stan Goldberg receive his Gold Key award as a new member of the NCS Hall of Fame. He is a true legend in the world of comics, and a great guy to boot. Steve McGarry‘s getting the Silver T-square for his incalculable efforts over the years to the NCS was also great to witness. Well deserved, both. Another high point was seeing the divisional award for “Online… READ MORE

May 24th, 2012 | Posted in General

Okay, so I have actually been in Vegas since Tuesday gearing up for the NCS Reuben Awards, but today will be my official unofficial “traveling” post. In fact, today I will be speaking at the Art Institutes Las Vegas with a few fellow members of the Usual Gang of Idiots, including Sergio Aragon?¬©s, Jack Davis, Don “Duck” Edwing, Al Jaffee and Sam Viviano. It’s a shame I couldn’t find any talented MAD artists for the group. !!!!! READ MORE

MAD about The $cream

May 4th, 2012 | Posted in General

In honor of Edvard Munch‘s painting “The Scream” setting an auction sales record of $119 million, MAD posted some of the many parodies of the famous painting that they have done (including the one above) over the years on their official blog, The Idiotical. Check out the others here. Here’s a parody I did of that painting for the Ray Grigg‘s film I Want Your Money. It appeared hanging on the wall in the Oval Office in one of the animated segments: Not really much effort on my part, I simply replaced the face of the screaming man with that of our current Commander in… READ MORE

The Wind Through the Keyhole- An Audiobook Non-Review

April 26th, 2012 | Posted in General

As many regular readers know, I am an avid listener to audiobooks at certain stages of my work in the studio. I can only listen to them when doing inking or coloring, which is more of a rendering process for me and less a conceptual one and therefore allows my mind to focus on both the work and the story. I’ve found these to be a great way to stay on task during grueling marathons of finish work. Regular readers might also be aware that I am a big fan of Stephen King‘s writing, especially his epic Dark Tower saga, which are some of my… READ MORE
