A Blast from the Past?

November 5th, 2012 | Posted in General

You have to love Facebook . . . where almost anything from the past can come back to haunt you. The above is a picture of an airbrushed T-shirt I did about 20 years ago (I’m guessing 1992 or 1993) for Barry Peterson, who was at the time an art director and writer for NOW Comics, the company for which I drew Married… with Children comics. In my defense, this was probably the first time I’d actually airbrushed on a T-shirt in years, and I was never very good at it. Things like freehand airbrush lettering is a real skill you have to do a… READ MORE

Swamped…

I actually had to cancel a trip to Nashville this weekend where I was suppose to attend the NCS Southeast Chapter’s meeting with fellow MADmen Nick Meglin, Angelo Torres and Rich Powell… that’s how crazy things have suddenly gotten. Thus, it’s the Dreaded Deadline Demon probably until the Sunday mailbag. READ MORE

MAD About Ellen

October 5th, 2012 | Posted in General

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player I haven’t posted much about my gig drawing caricatures for CNN at the Democratic National Convention, mainly because the photographer who took pictures of my and promised to send them on has not followed through… I was too busy drawing to take any. However, the above video clip from the TV show Ellen shows me briefly drawing Rainer and Atticus, these two kids she sent as correspondents to the DNC. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of US Presidents, and get quizzed by Anderson Cooper, Zach Braff and Michelle Obama. Towards the end they show me for a… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: Tom, what factors do you take into account on who (or what) to draw for “The Sketch O’ The Week”. I’ve noticed that you’ll draw someone who’s in a popular movie, or a person that’s currently on the news. What dictates your choice for the SoTW? Is it favoritism towards a celebrity you like? Or maybe someone who you enjoyed sketching out? Insight on this topic would be nice as I’m always entertained by the spontaneous decisions you make every week for the SoTW! A: When I sit down to do the SotW, I usually just grab a current magazine and start paging through… READ MORE

Humor in a Jugular Vain

September 17th, 2012 | Posted in General

Ah . . . vanity. In a way, it’s the ultimate target of the caricaturist. Nothing falls harder in the face of an accurate but biting caricature than the unrealistic self-perception of a vain subject. Like Anderson Cooper here. At the end of this clip from CNN, he goes on and on about how little he thinks the caricature that artist Glenn Ferguson did at the RNC in Tampa looks like him: Drawing live caricatures, you run up against a few truly vain people, and they never believe a caricature looks like them…even when it’s a dead-on likeness. Everyone else in the world thinks it… READ MORE

Elementary, My Dear Watson

September 14th, 2012 | Posted in General

Dr. Watson! The other day I posted a picture of my dog on my Facebook page, and someone asked me if I’d ever drawn him. Oh, yes. He has made cameo appearances in many of my illustrations, although I don’t think I’ve snuck him into MAD yet. His name is Dr. Watson, and he’s an almost 3 year old Lhasa Poo (Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix). He’s my studio buddy, and he hangs out with me while I work all day (and sometimes all night). He really is that cute… he looks like a toy. Here he is hamming it up in a few illustrations of mine… READ MORE

From Russia With Love

September 11th, 2012 | Posted in General

I received a great email today from a fellow caricaturist/illustrator who hails from Russia, telling me a story of how he got inspired to draw caricatures as a kid by a series of stickers featuring caricature art that came in packages of chewing gum: Clicky to Embiggen That is pretty cool. . . except of course that these stickers are all examples of copyright infringement. There are a lot of my old, OLD caricature samples, as well as a John Kascht, a Sebastian Kr?¬?ger, what I think is a Ben Burgraff and two (Hugh Grant and Gerard Depardieu) that look familiar but I do not… READ MORE
