I’ll be doing a short talk and signing copies of my book The Mad Art of Caricature! tomorrow (Sat. April 6th) at 2:00 pm at the Burnhaven Library in my hometown of Burnsville, MN. I am hopeful that tens of people will show up. I am also hopeful no one at the library will check my library card account and find out about that copy of Lady Chatterly’s Lover I’ve had checked out since 1982. READ MORE

Every once and awhile I get something like this in my inbox that really makes me smile: Tom, I’ve read EVERY book that was ever written on caricatures and at best I never considered myself anything more than an amateur caricaturist. After reading, then studying your book, I am now working the beach in Ft Lauderdale daily. Thanks to you I am now a professional caricaturist. You made a lifelong dream come true, and for that I thank you. Sincerely, Tim Timothy Wittneben Deerfield Beach, FL. That is perhaps the highest compliment anyone who has written a “how to” book of any kind can get. You… READ MORE

Some people seem to be confused or just terribly misinformed as to how the process that results in the three nominations for the National Cartoonists Society’s two online comics divisions work. Much of this seems to stem from a few people jumping to conclusions because this year the three nominees for “Best Online Comic: Short Form” all ended up being from Universal Uclick’s GoComics website. Said assumptions ran the gamut from the NCS jury being lazy and not looking beyond a single source of online comics, to bias in voting for “syndicated” online work rather than independent work, to accusing members of the Online Comics… READ MORE

Back in January I got a call from MAD art director Sam Viviano about a side project they were working on…DC wanted to celebrate MAD‘s 60th anniversary with a series of variant covers by the Usual Gang of Idiots for thirteen of their titles. Knowing that I am a huge Batman fan, Sam suggested to the MAD editors that I get to do one of the Batman titles. I was assigned the cover of “Detective Comics”. Given my own choice, I would have picked Detective as well, as opposed to “Batman”. Detective Comics was the title I collected as a kid, and it being the… READ MORE

Another exclusive look at one of the 13 MAD variant covers for various DC Comics titles comes our way courtesy of the good folks at Comic Book Resources. This is the cover of Superman #19, done by the incomparable Al Jaffee. So that’s one Fold-In cover and one “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions” cover. I wonder if they had Paul Coker Jr. do a “Horrifying Clich?¬©s” cover for “Constantine”? I imagine one of these days they’ll release the one I did. READ MORE
