A Midwest Caricaturist in King Alfred’s Court

August 15th, 2013 | Posted in Freelancing

…or “A Theme Park Caricaturist’s Long Journey Down a Freelance Path” The following is an article I wrote for the latest issue of the International Society of Caricature Artist‘s quarterly magazine Exaggerated Features. It is one of a series they call “A Master Piece”, meaning articles written by past winners of their highest honor, “Caricaturist of the Year” aka the “Golden Nosey” (which I won in 1998 and 1999). Its focus is advice on ways a live caricaturist can branch out into a career in freelance illustration: I’ll never forget my first summer drawing caricatures. It was 1985 and I was a new artist for… READ MORE

MAD Blog Woes

August 13th, 2013 | Posted in General

Just a boring update on the woes of Tom’s MAD Blog as I attempt to simply move it to another host. I gave up for the time being, so posting will resume on the old host until I can get this figured out. It’s a long story, but the short version is I moved the website to a new host a few years ago in an effort to take part of an initiative by a cartooning group. Because of the difference in server environments, the entire site had to be recoded from PHP to ASPX. Now said initiative is going to close up, and I… READ MORE

You Don’t Know Jack

August 6th, 2013 | Posted in General

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at a special event honoring a very special man. “From the Beginning: Jack Davis” was an exhibit of the work of the great cartoonist, caricaturist, and humorous illustrator at a terrific little gallery called the Glynn Art Association in Jack’s adopted hometown of St. Simons Island on coastal Georgia. Jack is easily one of the most beloved and honored cartoonists of the last century, but this exhibit was extra-special because it was organized and hosted by a local gallery… and it really opened the eyes of his neighbors as to who Jack really is.… READ MORE

Art and Al

MAD scribe extraordinaire Desmond Devlin sent me a link to this gem from 2001. It’s a show called “Theater Talk”, and features the great Art Spiegelman visiting the great Al Hirschfeld‘s studio and interviewing him. So much greatness in one small area…I am sure the resulting glow could be seen from space. READ MORE

Some Cool Kickstarter/IndieGoGos

July 30th, 2013 | Posted in General

Let me preface this by saying I am very discriminating about promoting Kickstarter campaigns or other crowdsourced projects. That doesn’t mean ones I don’t promote here I do not think are great ideas or worthy of attention and support… it simply means I don’t want my blog to become riddled with pleas crowdsourced projects. Fair warning if you write me and ask me to promote your project…not that I am some kind of internet powerhouse. Drop a note to Kim Kardashian of you want real publicity, then write her a check for ten grand and she’ll send out a tweet for you. Incidentally, that’s about… READ MORE
