Now Appearing in Viz!

August 16th, 2019 | Posted in Freelancing

If you grew up in the UK and had a suitably juvenile sense of humor you are probably familiar with the comic magazine Viz. Viz got started in 1979 as a fanzine produced by cartoonist Chis Donald from his bedroom in his parent’s house in Newcastle upon Tyne, and eventually grew to peak at 1.2 million copies sold per issue in the early 1990s, and was the third most popular magazine in the UK. It’s known for its parodies of other British comics, a number of characters in ongoing features that have branched out to animation and other media, and a lot of vulgar, blue,… READ MORE

Spot for Scholastic

May 28th, 2019 | Posted in Freelancing

This is a little spot illustration I did earlier this year for Scholastic. The article is a feature they do where two kids debate a topic, and this one asked the question “Is playing video games a sport?”. Below are the initial roughs (the text is from an earlier similar article, and for position only to show me the area the illustration needed to fill) and final pencils: READ MORE

Another Commercial Observer Cover

April 2nd, 2019 | Posted in Freelancing

Today’s Commercial Observer financial newspaper in New York City has a cover by yours truly. The lead story is about the “Power 50”, their annual ranking of the fifty most important figures of commercial real estate finance. I only had to draw the top four (whew). You won’t recognize any of them unless you are a big fan of NYC commercial real estate finance. Full image below. READ MORE

Misadventures in Animation

December 4th, 2018 | Posted in Freelancing

I haven’t done much work in the world of animation, just having done some simple character designs for segments on the “MAD” show on Cartoon Network and for a film called “I Want Your Money” in 2010. More recently I did a bunch of “turnarounds”, both full and partial, for a pitch for an animated show that didn’t get picked up. I thought I could now share a little of that artwork here. READ MORE

Professionalism and Freelancing

June 29th, 2018 | Posted in Freelancing

I’m in Portland right now doing a workshop, and arrived early to do a podcast and a couple of interviews for Wacom who is hosting the class at their “Experience Center”. During the podcast we discussed some of the other aspects of freelancing besides the art part of it. One of those aspects is “professionalism”, the lack of which is something that can greatly hold back, or completely derail, one’s career. By “professionlism”, I mean things like meeting deadlines, following through on promised stages of completion of a project, working well with art directors, etc. Don’t get me wrong, the art is job number one.… READ MORE

From The Freelance Files: Corporate Caricatures

November 7th, 2017 | Posted in Freelancing

While I don’t have time to do many personal commission outside of the comic-cons I work, I do sometimes do caricatures for corporate clients for executives that might be retiring or being honored in some way. What’s the difference between a personal caricature and one done for corporate client? Two things actually. One is that the subject is generally unaware of the project and I am not subjected to being art directed by the person whom the drawing depicts, and therefore avoid any complications brought on by vanity or unrealistic self-image. The second reason is plain and simple… money. I am comfortable charging corporate clients the… READ MORE

Doors Close, Doors Open

April 28th, 2017 | Posted in Freelancing

After over 15 years and approximately 160 (mostly) monthly illustrations for a company that produces media for workplace subscription services, the illustration you see above is probably the last one. The main art director retired earlier this year, and now it’s been months since I have gotten a call from the company. I was sort of warned this might be coming by some of the people I usually worked with there… the new folks in charge want to move in a “different direction”. I’m sad to see it end because I loved working with the art department there, and it was a very long association.… READ MORE
