Sketch O’The Day

Better late than never today. After watching the movie last night I couldn’t resist having another try at Daniel Craig: The guy has a great face to draw! It looks like it was chiseled out of granite. READ MORE

“Casino Royale” Hits the Inside Straight

December 9th, 2006 | Posted in General

I finally saw Casino Royale last night with the lovely Anna. I could probably be categorized as a little more than a casual 007 fan, although certainly no where near “Trekkie” level (sorry… TrekkER). Still I am a fan of the movie series and was greatly looking forward to seeing the new film. The problem with seeing a movie like this one so late after it’s opening is that the hype and word of mouth can be hard to live up to. I had heard nothing but good things about this film… “Best Bond in decades, maybe ever!”, “Daniel Craig is the best Bond since… READ MORE

On the Drawing Board

Currently still working (slowly) on a TV parody for MAD, poster job for Marlin Co., still waiting on feedback from the Ralph Nader museum job, and the cover job. Not much new to show, but here is the rough draft of the cover illustration: This cover may not happen as a final. Sometimes designer/publishers of magazines pay to develop more than one concept and offer choices to the client. We agreed on a price up to this stage, and another if we go to final. This particular client isn’t sure they want a ‘cartoon’ cover, although I intend to paint this one instead of doing… READ MORE

Here are the rest of the studies for that cover job. I redrew the ones of Giuliani and Clinton as I didn’t much like the first ones. This Giuliani is much better but Hillary is still off. We might see the Dreaded Deadline Demon here soon. Things are piling up. READ MORE

Working Out- Some Concepts

December 7th, 2006 | Posted in General

Previously I mentioned establishing goals when embarking on any kind of fitness program. Whether your goal is to lose weight, tone up, run marathons or get bigger and stronger, you need a plan to reach that goal. If you set your goals too high and/or expect too much from yourself at first, you will quickly lose steam and give up. Keep things realistic, but once you get into the swing of it you need to push yourself a little more each workout so you continue to progress. A well designed workout plan and approach makes all the difference. There are several things to keep in… READ MORE

I kind of cheated today, as these sketches are studies for a job: It’s a possible cover of a magazine featuring a bunch of presidential hopefuls. Also included will be McCain, Gingrich, Kerry, Romney and Thompson. The presidential/political jobs are starting early this year… READ MORE

Mock MAD Cover Competition Winner

December 6th, 2006 | Posted in General

A while ago I wrote this post about an informal competition I was helping judge on the National Caricaturist’s Network forum. In brief, the participating artists were to design and illustrate a MAD Magazine cover with the subject being Sylvester Stallone‘s new movie, Rocky Balboa. The competition is over, and there were many good entries. Everybody worked hard on their pieces, and choosing a winner wasn;t easy. As part of the competition, artists had to adhere to strict deadlines for roughs, pencils, finished caricatures and final art. Prizes went to first, second and third places. First place went to Minneapolis illustrator and caricaturist Zack Wallenfang… READ MORE
