Headed to Germany This Fall

June 20th, 2008 | Posted in General

The National Cartoonists Society and the National Cartoonist Society Foundation has been working with “Broadside” (Naval Times) cartoonist Jeff Bacon and the USO on a great program that brings cartoonists from various areas to military hospitals and medical centers for them to meet, talk with and draw for U.S. veterans who are convalescing from injuries sustained in defense of our nation. It’s an inspired and inspiring program, and many cartoonists have visited injured veterans in many U.S. military hospitals around the country. This fall the NCS and the USO are sponsoring their first cartoonist trip outside the U.S. for this purpose. Organized by Jeff and… READ MORE

It’s a MAD Art Show!

June 19th, 2008 | Posted in MAD Magazine

The St. Louis Artist’s Guild has apparently hit rock bottom, as they are stooping to an exhibit of artwork from MAD Magazine and as a result will no doubt lose all credibility as a patron of the arts. Worse yet, they aren’t even making any money off of it as it is free to the public!! What are they thinking? The show opening this Sunday with a reception from 1:00- 3:00 pm at the Guild’s gallery, and runs through Sept. 6th. I do not believe that there is any of my artwork in it, unless it’s from some private collection. All the more reason to… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

June 18th, 2008 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Since I sort of already did a sketch for this week of Edward Norton for yesterday’s review of “The Incredible Hulk“, I’m going to kill two birds with one stone today by posting the pencil sketches of actor Michael Rooker for those movie set digital paintings I shared earlier this week. I say “kill two birds…” because they will serve not only as this week’s sketch(es) but also demonstrate the earlier stages of those paintings which I was privately asked about by several readers: Click image for a closer look… Click image for a closer look… And again, here are the paintings done from the… READ MORE

The Incredible Hulk- A Review

June 17th, 2008 | Posted in General

“That’s IT! No more workout advice from Carrot Top…” As part of my Father’s Day I went to the movies to see “The Incredible Hulk“, a film I was hesitant to buy all the way into. I had heard some of the bad press about star Edward Norton‘s displeasure with script changes and non-changes, was unsure of some of the acting choices and in general didn’t much like the look of the new Hulk. I was pleasantly surprised in many ways. It was no “Iron Man“, but I enjoyed the film quite a bit. This review will contain no plot spoilers, although the plot isn’t… READ MORE

On the Drawing Board- 6/16/08

June 16th, 2008 | Posted in Freelancing

Hoo Hah! A few projects ongoing right now and sadly not much I can share yet. Here are two pieces I did a few months ago that is part of the “Super Capers” movie project I have been working on for some time now. They don’t give anything away as far as the movie goes, so I think it’s okay at this point to share them here. Sometimes jobs evolve as they progress along, and this particular job has definitely done that. The movie is a superhero spoof/comedy and my part of the production was to be three different jobs… “turnaround” illustrations of the 14… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

June 15th, 2008 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I went full-time freelance several months ago and my wife and I just had our first kid (a boy) last Sunday. Obviously I’m taking some time off to get adjusted to have a new guy in the house but the work is starting to pile up. As I’m easing back into the work my question is how did you find that balance between work and family when working from home? A: I thought this would be a good question for today, being Father’s Day. First off, congratulations on your new arrival and happy First Father’s Day to you! This is my 18th. Since I… READ MORE

My Dirty Little Mac Pro

June 14th, 2008 | Posted in It's All Geek to Me!

You drrrrty, drrrrty little tramp. Despite what Apple might want you to believe, Mac’s are not infallible supercomputers that “just work”. They are machines… and as such they break down, have technical problems, glitches, etc. just like any other machines. Hardware-wise they aren’t any better than PCs, and since you are severely restricted in what hardware you can use if your Mac has a design flaw of some kind it becomes a problem that cannot be easily corrected. That is one of the major drawbacks of using Apple computers… you have to take what Apple will give you with few, if any, other options. Take… READ MORE

Where for art thou, MAD movie parodies?

June 13th, 2008 | Posted in MAD Magazine

I occasionally peruse MAD Magazine message board forums like Mad Mumblings and the Official MAD Message Boards, and one common subject keeps getting brought up… … where are all the movie parodies? In years past, you could almost always count on at least one parody of a movie and/or a TV show in each issue of MAD… often one of each. TV show parodies are still fairly plentiful in the magazine, but in the last few years there has been a decline in the number of movie parodies. In 2007 there was a grand total of three movie parodies in MAD, “Spider-Man 3”, “Harry Potter… READ MORE
