If you are lucky enough to live on the islands of Hawai’i, you will find a few of my illustrations in the newest issue of Honolulu magazine. Each year they give out their version of the “Worst Things of the Year” called the Sour Poi Awards, and this year they had me illustrate that article with a full page illo and a few spots. We kick off 2011 with a small warm-up study of Javier Bardem from his role in “No Country for Old Men”. Done with a 005 Pigma Micron pen with a couple of touches from a Kuretake brush-like marker. I was always fascinated how the hairstyle, slumping shoulders and stiff posture Bardem assumed for this character made his neck look gigantically thick. READ MORE

Q: Do you find architecture grueling to draw? Is there any trick to it or do you really have to draw each and every stinking brick and tile? A: Drawing buildings and architecture can be very tiresome, but you have to know when it’s appropriate to draw every brick and tile and when you are better off “suggesting” the features of something like a building. Every illustration has a focus, and adding too much detail to an element that is only a supporting player in an image will distract from the focus and make the illustration too busy. I usually don’t post on Saturdays but I couldn’t pass up doing one on the first day of the new year. This is an old sketch revised appropriately.
