The Latest for the “Wall of Shame”

January 12th, 2012 | Posted in Wall of Shame

Clicky to Embiggen It’s been a long time since I got a new piece for the Wall of Shame, but this arrived in the mail the other day and is going to be proudly framed and hung in the studio. For those not familiar with my “Wall of Shame”… I occasionally get calls from the producer, director or some star of a TV show of movie that I did the parody art for in MAD who wants to buy some of the original art. I usually cut a deal that includes my sending them an oversized print of the splash page to get signed by… READ MORE

OnLine Comics Eligibility Requirement Amended

January 10th, 2012 | Posted in News

I’ve gotten several very constructive responses about the NCS’s new Online Comic Strip Division award, with some great suggestions that we will certainly look at incorporating into next year’s awards. Thanks to all those who both understand the challenge of putting this together and took the time to offer real thoughts and suggestions. One thing that was pointed out to us needs immediate correction. The original requirements for eleigibilty for the division included this: 5. Creator must earn the greater part of their living directly from the strip/property Has been amended to: 5. Creator must earn the greater part of their living directly from cartooning… READ MORE

New 2011 NCS On-Line Comic Strip Division Award

January 9th, 2012 | Posted in General

As many readers here may know, I am the current president of the National Cartoonists Society, a title affectionately known as “the office nobody else wanted or were dumb enough to take on”. The president does a lot of stuff, like plan the annual NCS Reuben award weekend, help co-ordinate the awards, provide snacks at the NCS board meetings… you know, presidential crap. Occasionally the NCS board even does something new, exciting and important…like this: It’s been a long-time coming, but the NCS will have a web-comics division for the Reuben Awards this year. Awards membership chairman Sean Parkes and I, along with input from… READ MORE

Illustration below: And yes, Jeff actually DOES have an Achmedmobile dragster. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: I am just starting my career as a freelance artist/illustrator. I just completed a project with a credit union for a character design that they used in their advertisements. When the obvious discussion of pricing came up, I wasn’t sure where to begin. We settled, quite quickly, without any problems. I was just curious if there is any method to the madness? A: This is a question I get pretty frequently, so every once and a while I re-post this answer from a few years ago.. simply because it’s still as good an answer as I can come up with: I get individual e-mails… READ MORE

At Your Local Library?

January 6th, 2012 | Posted in News

Do you wish your school or local public library carried The Mad Art of Caricature!? So do I! Well, now they can. The Mad Art of Caricature! is officially being distributed for K-12 school libraries through Follett Library Resources and for U.S. Public libraries through their sister company, Book Wholesalers, Inc. Unfortunately no library will have a book on their shelves they don’t know exists. So, how can you go about getting them to stock a copy? Just ask one of the librarians about getting one through the appropriate resource above. Libraries won’t stock self-published books unless they have a national distributor, and now we… READ MORE
