A Hollow Victory

February 20th, 2012 | Posted in News

Last week’s kerfuffle over the New York Times Sunday Review‘s new initiative restore an editorial cartoon to it’s features by soliciting submissions of finished cartoons on spec created quite a bit of negative response from professional cartoonists. Cartoonist, former National Cartoonist Society president and Cagle Cartoons syndicate owner Daryl Cagle was one of many who received the following response from the Times last week: As I’m sure you all know, we got a lot of reactions to our request for cartoons for a new feature in the Sunday Review — much of it negative. Your very good questions and criticisms of our process have forced… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: Regarding using DVDs or other video sources for finding reference for your caricatures: Ever since upgrading to MAC OS X Lion I’ve had a devil of a time finding a screen capture solution that allows me to grab a movie still from an iTunes movie or a DVD. I read on your blog that you recommended “CaptureIt!”,¬¨‚Ć but I downloaded and ran the trial version and it doesn’t work either. The images it captures are just the white-and-grey grid. Have you been able to find anything that actually works in Lion? A: This question came from fellow Minnesota illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt last week and… READ MORE

Bonus Sketch o’the Week

February 16th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Well, this is more of a retouch rather than a bonus sketch. I dug out this old sketch of Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, when I needed to put a bunch of pictures of recognizable overweight celebrities in the background of the splash page of the Mike & Molly parody I did for the last issue of MAD. I did a VERY quick colorizing job on the black and white pencil sketch with the above results. The image printed very tiny in the magazine (about 1/2 inch square), thus the very loose paint job. Shatner is notoriously hard to caricature, and I think the color… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

This week’s sketch subject is multiple-Grammy winning singer Adele, who is a major celebrity around the Richmond household. She is The Lovely Anna‘s favorite, and my kids are all musically gifted singers and musicians who appreciate great talents. Adele is a great talent, no question. You need only look at the Grammy performances to see that. While Rhianna, Nikki Minaj and others had elaborate productions and stageshows, Adele needed only a microphone and a spotlight, and blew them all away. The Richmond clan are big fans, so I spent a little longer than usual on this sketch as a result . . . although I… READ MORE

John Severin: 1921-2012

February 14th, 2012 | Posted in News

The Comics Beat is reporting that legendary comic book artist John Severin passed away on Sunday, Feb 12th in his home in Denver, Colorado, surrounded by family. John had one of the longest and well-respected careers in comics we will probably ever see. He was one of the early artists for E.C. Comics, and one of the first artists for MAD, doing work for the first several issues under Harvey Kurtzman from 1952-1954. The above image is his first appearance in MAD #1. He did so much comic work over the years it’s almost impossible to list it all. He eventually became the main artist… READ MORE

MAD #514 Sneak Peek: Mike & Molly Parody

February 14th, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

As promised, here is a peek at the MAD parody of the TV Show Mike & Molly, written by Arnie Kogen! Clicky to Embiggen Sharp-eyed people might notice the absence of empty word balloons that usually adorn my MAD artwork. I could tell you WHY the folks at MAD have decreed I am no longer allowed to draw in and color around said word boxes . . . but then I’d have to kill you. One day I will be able to tell that story. Until then, you will all have to stew in the land of uncertainty and rumor! MMWUUHAHAHAHA!! Anyway, go buy a… READ MORE
