Behind the Scenes- The Hunger Pains Parody

April 17th, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Final splash page, sans words… Since EW.com scooped me on the sneak peek of the MAD parody of The Hunger Games, this post will be more of a “behind the scenes” of the job. As always, clicky image to embiggen. The writer of the parody was Desmond Devlin. First pencil rough . . . Grade: F- Above is the first pencil rough of the splash. This was a complex splash, because all the word boxes were being spoken by one person (Stanley Tucci’s host character “Cesear Flickerman”), there were a LOT of word boxes, necessitating three rows, and most of them described a character that… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

April 15th, 2012 | Posted in Mailbag

Uh oh… looks like the mailbag is empty! Well, it’s not really completely empty, but the only ones I’ve got right now are either repeats of previous questions or of the “can you teach me how to cross-hatch?” or “how do you exaggerate people in caricature?” which aren’t really questions so much as they are requests for long and involved tutorials, and are needing a lot more time than I can give for this weekly feature. A good Sunday Mailbag question can certainly involve an image or two and a somewhat long answer, but anything like a tutorial is a different matter. It’s entirely possible… READ MORE

Yet Another One for the Wall of Shame!

April 13th, 2012 | Posted in Wall of Shame

Clicky to Embiggen… I actually received this one earlier than the¬¨‚ĆMike & Molly print I blogged about the other day, but hadn’t had a chance to scan it in yet. This one came courtesy of series star Jim O’Heir, which plays poker with a friend of my friend, caricaturist Jim Batts. I sent two copies of this print to Jim (O’Heir, not Batts), one for him and one for me with the signatures, but he unfortunately had the cast sign what was supposed to be his copy, thus my own signature is on this one, personalized to him. Hmmmm . . . actually that might… READ MORE

Fun With Fanatics

April 12th, 2012 | Posted in General

It’s the age of the Web, where everybody with a keyboard and an internet connection gets to voice their opinions, and in fact seem to think they are obligated to. One of the interesting things about doing parodies (i.e. “making fun of”) things in MAD and elsewhere is listening to all the griping and complaining people who are enamored of your target do online. I don’t go looking for it, but I do happen across it now and then. Some people have a very weak sense of humor, and can’t stand hearing something they like get ridiculed. That’s natural enough, but it’s equally funny to… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

April 11th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

And now for something completely different . . . a dog. It is quite possible to caricature animals. In fact, animals have a lot of personality and expression which can be a lot of fun to capture. You need only look at some of the great Disney and other studio’s animation of animal characters to see that. The first sketch is a fairly straight drawing of a miniature pincher, with just a little bit of exaggeration. The second exaggerates a lot more. READ MORE
