Sketch o’the Week

May 9th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Have to cheat on the SotW this week as I am too busy with deadlines to do anything new. Thus, here is a small portion of the pencil sketch of a much bigger piece I did last month for a special project that will remain unnamed until such time as it’s released. READ MORE

Get MAD with the Kenosha Fesitval of Cartooning

May 7th, 2012 | Posted in News

Earlier today I blogged about the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning’s Kickstarter campaign needing some support. Well, I’ve put a little of my artwork where my mouth is. The KFoC just added a new reward for a $400 or greater donation…an original page from MAD Magazine donated and signed by myself. There are five of these available, and I am sure the stampede for them will be fast and furious!!!! (crickets chirping . . .) Well, maybe not, but it is another option for those who are interested. All five pieces will be pages from a TV or movie parody that appeared in MAD. I’ll also… READ MORE

Kenosha Festival of Cartooning Part Deux

[vimeo width=”480″ height=”360″]http://vimeo.com/40327768[/vimeo] A week or two ago I blogged about the Kickstarter campaign to fund the second annual Kenosha Festival of Cartooning. Things started out with a bang with the drive but there is still a long way to go. Check out the video above, produced by Tall Tale Radio’s Tom Racine, to find out about the festival. If you can help out, even with just a small donation, please do. These kinds of public cartooning events are few and far between, and not everybody likes to go to comic cons to meet their favorite cartoonists . . . stormtrooper costumes get rank very… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: Do you have any tips on how to change a person’s expression and retain a likeness. Say you have photo of someone smiling but they want a surprised or angry look. Any advice? A: In the case of a single image of a subject, I would require the subject (assuming it’s the subject asking for the changed expression, like in¬¨‚Ć a gift caricature) to give me a reference showing the kind of expression they are asking for. Even though faces, for the most part, follow somewhat similar patterns when making an expression like “surprise” or “anger”, you cannot pretend you really know what a… READ MORE

MAD about The $cream

May 4th, 2012 | Posted in General

In honor of Edvard Munch‘s painting “The Scream” setting an auction sales record of $119 million, MAD posted some of the many parodies of the famous painting that they have done (including the one above) over the years on their official blog, The Idiotical. Check out the others here. Here’s a parody I did of that painting for the Ray Grigg‘s film I Want Your Money. It appeared hanging on the wall in the Oval Office in one of the animated segments: Not really much effort on my part, I simply replaced the face of the screaming man with that of our current Commander in… READ MORE

Latest for SI Kids

Clicky to Embiggen… This two page-spread illustration appears in the May issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids. It illustrates an article on the Oklahoma City Thunder pro basketball team. The gag with the nesting dolls is twofold. First, it depicts how their “inside game” is integral to their success, and also how most of the players were more-or-less anonymous behind Kevin Durant (until this year, anyway). The players shown (left to right): Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Serge Ibaka, Kendrick Perkins. A bit of a departure from my usual style, which is always fun to do. READ MORE
