Sketch o’the Week- Pee Wee!

July 11th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Okay, so it’s not really a sketch. It’s actually a spot illustration from an old job I ran across recently. This one reminds me of a story from about 20 years ago during my live caricature drawing days when I had a run in with a theme park manager . . . I was working at one of my theme park concessions in 1992 when one of the newer members of the park’s “management team” came up to the booth and asked if I was the owner. “Yes,” I told her. She pointed at one of the many examples up on the wall, one I… READ MORE

San Diego Comic-Con Schedule

July 9th, 2012 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Hard to believe the San Diego Comic-Con is at the end of this week. I’ll be there again this year, but I will not have my own booth. That experiment did not go as well as I’d hoped last year. It was fun to have my own space, but the location wasn’t great and it took a lot of work to sell enough stuff just to pay the booth fee before there was any profit being made. This year I will be at the National Cartoonists Society booth (#1307/1309) much of the time, and will have posted, scheduled hours at the booth as to when… READ MORE

Q: How long does it take you to make your warm up sketches? When do you consider yourself to be ‘warm’? How important is it to do warm up sketches? A: I have a confession to make. I know this will sound like heresy to some, but I’m not a big believer in doing warm up sketches every day. I never go into the studio and consciously sit down to “warm up” prior to getting to work. I just start working. Even when I am inking, the most I will do is test out my pen nib or brush on a scrap piece of paper… READ MORE

Wacom Cintiq 24HD- A Video Review

July 5th, 2012 | Posted in General

I mentioned in a blog post the other day that I had a new toy in the studio. . . actually it’s no toy. The Wacom Cintiq 24HD is waaaaay too big to be a toy. I wasn’t planning on upgrading my Cintiq as my 21ux, while the original square-screened model and about 7 years old, was still chugging along. However I recently did a book illustration job that was a pretty good payday, so I decided to take the plunge. I’m glad I did. Here’s something new. . . a video review!
