Q: How do you feel when clients ask caricature artists to “water down” their exaggeration. I feel they do not understand why they hired an artist in the first place. I believe you said you were asked to tone down your caricatures at the Democratic National Convention gig you worked at. I guess they did not want to offend public figures being drawn. Has a client made you change a commissioned project to be less exaggerated? As an analogy I do not think someone would ask a chef to tone down their spices at a restaurant. Recently a downtown restaurant asked four muralists to paint… READ MORE

Next month I will be one of several cartoonists who will visit Boise, Idaho in support of the Wyakin Warriors Foundation, an organization that helps severely injured veterans for life after their service to our country through education, professional training, job placement and more. Started by NCS member Jeff Bacon, who has been the driving force behind the USO trips many cartoonists have participated in over the last 5 years, the WW Foundation is a fantastic initiative and deserving of everyone’s support. There will be an online silent auction for all the cartoons and other stuff dontated by the cartoonists… I will give you more… READ MORE

Here are a few more of my illustrations for The Bro Code for Parents book, now available on Amazon and in your local bookstore. They are all spoofs of well-known children’s books, songs, nursery rhymes and activities like the paper dolls… all as re-envisioned by “How I Met Your Mother”‘s Barney Stinson: Clicky to embiggen… Clicky to embiggen… Clicky to embiggen… You can see more of them from my post last week. Like I said in that post, this was an interesting project as I had to mimic either the style of art or the “look” of certain things to make the parody effective. Only… READ MORE

Clicky to Embiggen… The October issue of Sports illustrated Kids has a tw0 page illustration of mine in it (above), depicting various athletes in Halloween costumes they might wear. The athletes: Jeremy Lin, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Michael Phelps, Anthony Davis, and Bryce Harper. Here’s the initial pencil rough (obviously text is just for layout placement): Clicky to Embiggen… They decided it was too crowded so they took out Gabby Douglas (too bad, I liked that one best), and I had to do some moving around: Clicky to Embiggen… READ MORE

Q: Are you going to get the new Modbook Pro that was just announced as being available soon? A: For those who don’t know what a Modbook is, it is a Mac laptop that has been converted into a tablet computer that has a pressure-sensitive screen using Wacom technology, so you have a totally portable digital drawing/painting solution. A company called Axiotron originally produced these Modbooks, using the old white MacBooks as the base computer. The company went under and disappeared without much explanation a year or two ago. Apparently the original inventor of the technology, or one of them, is now working with a… READ MORE

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player I haven’t posted much about my gig drawing caricatures for CNN at the Democratic National Convention, mainly because the photographer who took pictures of my and promised to send them on has not followed through… I was too busy drawing to take any. However, the above video clip from the TV show Ellen shows me briefly drawing Rainer and Atticus, these two kids she sent as correspondents to the DNC. They have an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of US Presidents, and get quizzed by Anderson Cooper, Zach Braff and Michelle Obama. Towards the end they show me for a… READ MORE
