Clicky any to Embiggen… This is going to be a killer week with a cover for the Utne reader due and trying to finish up a five page parody for MAD, plus the back cover of a trade publication that is going to be a really fun parody “homage” to a famous movie poster coming up right after that. Q: Do you ever find yourself “taking revenge” on a personality or celebrity you find particularly annoying? For example, being so fed up with constantly hearing about the shenanigans of Snooki or a Kardashian, your only option is to skewer them through caricature (although admittedly your drawings don’t seem to come across as mean-spirited). A: I will certainly channel my feelings about a subject into the caricature, so if I dislike them or find them annoying that will play into my drawing. MAD has been pretty good at leaking exclusive sneak peeks of what they are up to out to various internet sites and entertainment news sources. The art for my sold out “Secret Agent Man” print is featured as a double page spread in this James Bond caricature tribute book, which is not really in print yet but is now being offered as a sort of “Kickstarter” preorder from a company called Mad Artist Publishing. The deal is they need 350 preorders to do a print run of this hardcover book with a slipcase. I was reluctant to have my artwork in the book initially, thinking it was unlikely the publisher had secured the rights from MGM and the Fleming estate, but apparently they did so it’s all legal. Due to popular request, this week I’m posting three recent caricatures from my quickly dwindling number of available Limited Artist’s Editions of my book, The Mad Art of Caricature, complete with observations from the references I worked from: Sam here has a very wide head shape, accentuated by the close, flat lying hair on top but bushy, round hair on the sides. Those are some great shapes to work with, especially the way his bangs hang down from the strong part in his hair. Clicky to embiggen… I once again abused the faces of the guest speakers/special guests of the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Awards Weekend in the annual NCS Reuben brochure. This year the event will be held in beautiful Pittsburgh, PA. The scene above is of one of their famous “inclines”, a kind of cable car/train that goes up the steep side of the surrounding bluffs and gives you a commanding view of the picturesque three rivers valley.
