If I was in the New York City area, I’d go to this: Official Press Release: The Society of Illustrators Presents: The Art of Harvey Kurtzman A Retrospective at the Museum of American Illustration NEW YORK, NY (February 19, 2013)… The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators is proud to present “The Art of Harvey Kurtzman,” a diverse exhibition spanning the career of the man who created MAD and who had a broad and profound influence on American popular culture. This eight-week exhibit showcasing over 120 works will be on display March 6th through May 11th in the museum’s two-floor gallery in… READ MORE

The art for my sold out “Secret Agent Man” print is featured as a double page spread in this James Bond caricature tribute book, which is not really in print yet but is now being offered as a sort of “Kickstarter” preorder from a company called Mad Artist Publishing. The deal is they need 350 preorders to do a print run of this hardcover book with a slipcase. I was reluctant to have my artwork in the book initially, thinking it was unlikely the publisher had secured the rights from MGM and the Fleming estate, but apparently they did so it’s all legal. There is… READ MORE

Due to popular request, this week I’m posting three recent caricatures from my quickly dwindling number of available Limited Artist’s Editions of my book, The Mad Art of Caricature, complete with observations from the references I worked from: Sam here has a very wide head shape, accentuated by the close, flat lying hair on top but bushy, round hair on the sides. Those are some great shapes to work with, especially the way his bangs hang down from the strong part in his hair. Jose has a big grin…the sides of his lower face extend and come to pretty sharp angles at the jawline.… READ MORE

Clicky to embiggen… I once again abused the faces of the guest speakers/special guests of the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Awards Weekend in the annual NCS Reuben brochure. This year the event will be held in beautiful Pittsburgh, PA. The scene above is of one of their famous “inclines”, a kind of cable car/train that goes up the steep side of the surrounding bluffs and gives you a commanding view of the picturesque three rivers valley. The caricatured speakers/special guests are all depicting either famous Pittsburgh natives or representing movies that were filmed in Pittsburgh. Here’s a key: Mo Willems in “The Silence of… READ MORE

Clicky to Embiggen… Super swamped right now: MAD– Five page movie parody, actually a franchise parody. Workplace Poster– My usual monthly assignment UTNE Reader cover– This will be my 4th cover for them. WB Product Illustration– Another “Alfred E. Neuman as…” for use on merchandise WB Animation/Cartoon Network– Designs for another episode segment The image above was for a promotional poster/publication cover I did over a year ago that I don’t think was ever used. That was way before Howard was traded to the Lakers, so now it’s probably in the round file somewhere. I’m sharing it here for the first time, but I won’t… READ MORE

Clicky any of these images to embiggen… and I mean EMBIGGEN! The Lovely Anna gets very annoyed with me over one thing…okay, over many things, but this one thing in particular…I’m very impatient when it comes to things I want to have. I tend to get them right away and leave her nothing to buy me for gifts on my birthday or Christmas. Well, here’s another thing she won’t be able to get me for my birthday: the enormous new book Tales Calculated to Drive You MAD: Artist’s Edition. I saw an unboxing video of this book some weeks ago and blogged about it being… READ MORE

The National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year” is arguably the top honor a professional cartoonist can receive. The NCS first gave out the honor in 1946 to Milton Caniff, and in the 67 intervening years some of the greatest cartoonists in the history of the art form have received “The Reuben” (with the exception of a stumble last year, when they gave it to this clown.) This year’s nominees for the 2012 Reuben Award for “Cartoonist of the Year” were just announced by the NCS. They are: Brian Crane Rick Kirkman Stephan Pastis From the NCS Website: Brian Crane is… READ MORE
