The other day I received an email I knew would be coming someday, but I was still very unhappy to see: Tom, I do not know if you are aware of this, but your Mad Art of Caricature Book is on-line at http://issuu.com for anyone to view or read for free. Go to the website, type in Mad art of caricature in the search area this should take you to a different page, scroll down a couple of rows and you should be able to see the cover to click on. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Regards, Doug Thanks, Doug! I knew… READ MORE

The last of the Doctor sketches! Here is Matt Smith, the current Doctor and number eleven overall. You can see the full series here, and my limited edition print will be ready to debut next month at Comic-Con, followed by sales here on the blog until they are gone. By the way, these sketches are just studies. . . the final illustration will likely have some different takes on the various Doctors (although I did like the way the last four turned out). READ MORE

I’m just getting caught up now a week after getting home from the action-packed whirlwind that is the National Cartoonists Society’s annual Reuben Award Weekend. . . actually almost a whole week for The Lovely Anna and I. It is three days of fun, parties, great speakers, great events, and lots of time to catch up with old friends as well as meet many new ones. It’s just a great time, and always cool to meet many of your heroes of cartooning and find them to be the nicest, most approachable people in the world. Two things I have to mention off the bat is… READ MORE

I had a rare chance to do some cover art for a MAD publication recently, one of a couple of really cool “side” projects I did for the UGOIs this spring. This is the cover for MAD Presents Superman #1, which has a newsstand date of June 12th but is probably hitting comic book stores right about now. The cover is on the MAD website, so I can share it now. I did this at the very end of March, and what sucks is at the time there was very little in the way of references of Superman’s new look/outfit. You could see there was… READ MORE

Q: Please tell us about a topic that’s intrigued me for long time…the SIGNATURE OF THE ARTIST, like your aesthetically pleasing signature. And why CAPITAL LETTERS. Like Mort Drucker also signed in Capital Letters. Please share any tips on how and what type of signature should an artist sign with. Also the placement of signatures. Do you sign your cheques/ bills etc with similar sign , or there’s a separate and exclusive “Signature Style” meant only for Artwork? A: Artist’s signatures are a sort of fascinating thing, because most are very deliberately designed. I only know of a very few artists that simply write their… READ MORE

The Kickstarter campaign to help cover the expenses of the upcoming Jack Davis retrospective I mentioned yesterday just got rolling. I was going to promote the fact that I donated this original MAD page as one of the rewards for pledging, but it’s already been snapped up!: Clicky to embiggen… There are a lot of other cool rewards including a personal commissioned drawing by Walt Simonson, a signed copy of IDW’s new Jack Davis’s EC Stoies: Artist’s Edition, and original Arnold Roth illustration (!!) and many more. Go support this show if you can… their goal is only $3,000 but if they get more they… READ MORE

The Lovely Anna and the Animated Elizabeth at Walt Disney World Bear with me for the set-up to this, because it needs it. Frequent readers of my blog probably know that my oldest child, Elizabeth (23) is autistic…and not the kind of autism where you go to college, write books, appear on “America’s Top Model” or get “cured” by Jenny McCarthy and a gluten-free diet. Elizabeth has the rocking back and forth, hand-flapping, struggling with simple communication type autism. In other words, she won’t be going to college, getting married, having kids or living a “normal” life. She’ll be with us until she or we… READ MORE
