Monday MADness!- Tony Soprano

June 24th, 2013 | Posted in Monday MADness

I thought as long as I revisited two of the three James Gandolfini pieces I did for MAD, I might as well show a little of the other one as well. Here’s the splash and some close-ups/panels from MAD #482’s “America’s Next Top Mobster”, a mash-up of “The Sopranos” and, uh…. well, every crappy “pretending to look for the next top something” reality TV show, written by Desmond Devlin: Clicky to Embiggen… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: Do you ever get tired of drawing smiles? You know when you have a lousy day and all there are all big toothy smiles… has there been a day where you were just sick of it? Also, what’s your favourite expression to draw? A: You are obviously referring to drawing live caricatures with this question, so I will answer from that perspective. First, the short answer: no, I don’t get sick of drawing everyone with big, toothy smiles because I don’t draw everyone that way. I draw a caricature of THEM, and the specific smile they give me/have. In some cases I don’t draw… READ MORE

More on James Gandolfini

Clicky to embiggen… MAD Magazine has been around for a long time, and was both an influence on and/or a favorite of, many kids who later grew up to be famous/influential professionals in film, TV and other entertainments venues. As a result, every once and awhile when I do a TV show or movie parody in the magazine, one of the producers, directors, writer, stars or some other person involved in the creation of the show ends up being one of those kids who loved MAD, and contacts the magazine looking for the original artwork. I am happy to sell it to them, but I… READ MORE

Yeah, They’re the Taxmen!

I received this email from Amazon.com the other day: We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account will be closed and your Amazon Services LLC Associates Program Operating Agreement will be terminated effective June 30, 2013. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional Minnesota state tax collection legislation passed by the state legislature and signed by Governor Dayton on May 23, 2013, with an effective date of July 1, 2013. As a result, we will no longer pay any advertising fees for customers referred to an Amazon Site after June 30 nor will we accept new applications… READ MORE

James Gandolfini- 1961-2013

June 20th, 2013 | Posted in General

The above part of an old MAD piece featuring actor James Gandolfini, who unexpectedly passed away yesterday. What a terrible shame, at 51 he should have had many years of thrilling audiences with his fantastic talent. I drew Gandolfini many times in MAD, including “A MAD Peek Behind the Scenes on the Set of the Sopranos” in MAD 422, “America’s Next Top Mobster” in MAD 482, and a MAD 20 piece in issue 485 where we showed a number of different, and better, ways “The Sopranos” should have ended. Here’s a few of those in tribute to James Gandolfini: The Gallagher Ending The Newhart Ending… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Lawrence Fishburne

June 19th, 2013 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Speaking of Perry White, this week’s sketch is of actor Lawrence Fishburne. I’ve been watching the new TV series “Hannibal” this spring since I am a big fan of (almost) all of Thomas Harris‘s books, but I am giving up on the show. Fishburne’s job portraying FBI boss Jack Crawford is one of the few good things about the series, however. READ MORE

Man of Steel- A Review

June 18th, 2013 | Posted in General

I took my three youngest kids to see Man of Steel over Father’s day weekend. Overall, I liked the film quite a bit. I was a little surprised at the volume of angry fanboy reaction online… most seemed to think Christopher Nolan and Zack Synder missed the boat on the character. I read some comments saying Superman was a “homicidal monster”, “soulless” and that there was “no character development”. They must have been watching a different movie than the one I saw. SPOILER ALERT!! I cannot examine the character decisions at the root of this film without revealing major plot moments, since they define the… READ MORE

Monday MADness!- Bond, James Bond

June 17th, 2013 | Posted in Monday MADness

Clicky to embiggen… I finally got permission to be able to post a peek at the art I did for MAD #521 for the article entitled “Casebook: Spyfail- The Battle of the Bonds”, written by Desmond Devlin. It took a little longer this time because the exclusive first sneak peek at the article was promised to another website, who didn’t bother to run it, so I had to either wait until they did run it or until enough time had passed that it didn’t matter. This was a fun project in that I got to draw all the actors who have played Bond throughout the… READ MORE
