MAD scribe extraordinaire Desmond Devlin sent me a link to this gem from 2001. It’s a show called “Theater Talk”, and features the great Art Spiegelman visiting the great Al Hirschfeld‘s studio and interviewing him. So much greatness in one small area…I am sure the resulting glow could be seen from space. READ MORE

Sadly another cop-out this week and I am currently in route to St. Simons Island, GA to pay proper respect to the incomparable Jack Davis at the opening of his gallery show in his adoptive hometown. I predict Jack will say “I don’t deserve all this attention!” or some derivative of that about a million times during the festivities. Unlike many people who play at false modestly, he really believes this… it’s part of what makes him Jack Davis. Anyway, this is the pencil sketch of a recent Marlin workplace poster job. Inks and colored final below. Reports from Georgia to follow. READ MORE

Let me preface this by saying I am very discriminating about promoting Kickstarter campaigns or other crowdsourced projects. That doesn’t mean ones I don’t promote here I do not think are great ideas or worthy of attention and support… it simply means I don’t want my blog to become riddled with pleas crowdsourced projects. Fair warning if you write me and ask me to promote your project…not that I am some kind of internet powerhouse. Drop a note to Kim Kardashian of you want real publicity, then write her a check for ten grand and she’ll send out a tweet for you. Incidentally, that’s about… READ MORE

Clicky to Embiggen… Photo courtesy of Tom Bunk Last week I was in New York City to film some interview footage for the upcoming documentary ‘When We Went MAD“, and hung about the MAD offices all day while many of the Usual Gang of Idiots did their segments. Somebody got smart and took a picture, but sadly after painter extraordinaire Richard Williams had left, and before Spy vs. Spy artist Peter Kuper rolled in… Here’s the key: Dick DeBartolo– Longtime MAD writer Desmond Devlin– Also longtime MAD writer but not as longtime as Dick Charlie Kadau– Senior Editor Tom Bunk– Wacky MAD artist Irving Schild–… READ MORE

I can finally share a sneak peek of “The Slobbit” from MAD #522. The above splash is not the actual splash from the magazine but my art with the layout text boxes and copy pasted in… the guys at MAD were too busy producing a magazine to get me a JPEG of the final pages. Due to the odd nature of the splash with the map and overlaying insets I didn’t do the inked text boxes, but rather assembled the whole thing digitally and submitted “full art” as they call it. MAD did the text boxes on the final, although I did it the usual… READ MORE

Q: I saw you at Comic-Con last weekend, great to meet you. I really enjoyed seeing the original MAD artwork of yours you had there. I wanted to ask you about the size you work at. Those pages were enormous! They are much bigger than most comic book art pages are. Why do you work that large? A: Those pages you saw, which were all from movie or TV parodies from MAD, were done at “twice up” or 200% of print size. That means a full printed page from MAD, which is 8 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches, would have an original art size of… READ MORE
