I can finally share a sneak peek of “The Slobbit” from MAD #522. The above splash is not the actual splash from the magazine but my art with the layout text boxes and copy pasted in… the guys at MAD were too busy producing a magazine to get me a JPEG of the final pages. Due to the odd nature of the splash with the map and overlaying insets I didn’t do the inked text boxes, but rather assembled the whole thing digitally and submitted “full art” as they call it. MAD did the text boxes on the final, although I did it the usual… READ MORE

Q: I saw you at Comic-Con last weekend, great to meet you. I really enjoyed seeing the original MAD artwork of yours you had there. I wanted to ask you about the size you work at. Those pages were enormous! They are much bigger than most comic book art pages are. Why do you work that large? A: Those pages you saw, which were all from movie or TV parodies from MAD, were done at “twice up” or 200% of print size. That means a full printed page from MAD, which is 8 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches, would have an original art size of… READ MORE

After spending a lot of time chatting with folks at the San Diego Comic Con, it seems I am being asked more and more why I still draw and ink traditionally…i.e. with pencil, dip pen and brush on bristol…rather than just going all digital. In fact, I am getting more and more puzzled looks of incredulity over this question as opposed to casual interest, especially since I do all my coloring via the computer and many people therefore assume I am completely digital. There is an easy answer to that… I like working traditionally. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone who works… READ MORE

Have to cop out this week as I am still playing catch up from Comic-Con. Here’s the pencil rough from the splash page of the parody of “Mike and Molly” from a year or two ago in MAD.¬¨‚Ć Clicky to embiggen… READ MORE

I’m back from Comic-Con International 2013 with a report on the event: Too many people too many funky smells not enough places to sit down New this year was the penchant for people to wear backpacks roughly the size of Rhode Island. Whenever one of these folks spun around to see some sight or another, it would cause moments similar to that scene in the Lord of the Rings where Sauron swings his mace and sends waves of elves and soldiers flying. Enough complaining… Comic-Con is really a great deal of fun and tremendously cool, just so long as you possess yourself in patience when… READ MORE

Officially announced at the MAD Comic-Con panel on Saturday: Apparently TIME Home Entertainment was so happy with last year’s “Totally MAD” 60th anniversary book that they fell for another book pitch by those masters of schmoozing, the MAD editors! Now available for pre-order is “Inside MAD“, 256 pages of complete stupidity . . . and a few nifty surprises. The concept for this book is quite a bit different that your average MAD book…they asked the Usual Gang of Idiots what their all-time favorite MAD article was, and then made us explain why in a semi-coherent paragraph or two. You’ll discover the favorite MAD pieces… READ MORE

Rather than doing my usual Sunday Mailbag, I’m instead linking to an interview I did with Michael Cavna of the Washington Post’s “Comic Riffs”, where I am asked and answer a bunch of questions. READ MORE
