… of the scheduled posts feature on my blog that is supposedly fixed. If you are reading this. it’s fixed and all is right with the world. If you are not reading this, I am currently cursing Go Daddy, WordPress, the Internets, Al Gore, Steve Jobs, Miley Cyrus (just because) and technology in general. READ MORE

Acquista la mia roba!

September 16th, 2013 | Posted in General

That’s Italian for “Buy my Stuff!” One week from today will mark 25 years since The Lovely Anna and I walked down the aisle and became husband and wife. I’ll have a bit more on that when the big day arrives, but only if I can figure out how to fix the “scheduled posts” feature of my blog as it’s broken right now and I won’t be home. In fact, Anna and I will be in Venice having dinner overlooking the lagoon on a fabulous eleven day tour of Italy that evening… a dream trip of ours we’ve been saving up for for a long… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Conan!

September 16th, 2013 | Posted in Monday MADness

Seems like a long time since I’ve done one of these… every (supposedly) Monday I try and post some MAD related art or tid-bit no one has seen on the blog before. Sometimes it’s all the pencil roughs from a project, or something behind-the-scenes, or just some cool thing MAD has got going, like a book project or some such. Today’s Monday MADness is something that demonstrates I am either losing my mind or have been in this business too long. It’s a caricature of TV talk show host Conan O’Brien I did for MAD back in 2010… my apologies for the LONG post: The… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag

Q: I know from reading your blog that a caricaturist can use caricatures of celebrities to display their work, but cannot sell them due to the celebrity “owning” their likeness, and that it is not worth the hassle of getting into legal trouble doing it. Having said that, an artist sold a painting of a nude Bea Arthur a few months back- Don’t the same rules apply? Or are exemptions made for “fine” art? A: I’d like to preface my comments below by saying I am not a lawyer and this is not meant to substitute for real legal advice… I’m just a guy who… READ MORE

NCS President’s Challenge Coin

September 14th, 2013 | Posted in General

For all those of you getting tired of the USO tour posts, this is the last one. On to regular life… People in the military all know what a challenge coin is, but few civilians do. A challenge, or unit, coin is a medallion that represents affiliation, support or patronage to the organization minted on the coin. Almost all military units have their own coins, carried by the members of the units, and commanders often have special coins to give out when someone does something special for the unit. According to legend, the challenge coin originated during World War I, when American volunteers from all… READ MORE

2013 NCS/USO Tour- Manas Transit Center, Kyrgyzstan

September 13th, 2013 | Posted in General

When we do these USO cartoonist tours active war zones we fly commercial flights up to a point, but eventually we switch over to military flights.. On our way back home we planned on spending a full day there drawing prior to shipping out for the States. Saturday, Sept 7th– Our trip back was a real “red eye”. We were supposed to leave KAF on Saturday afternoon, spend the night, draw the next day and then leave for home early Monday morning. Instead, out flight was scheduled for midnight. Military flight times often get changed at the last minute, and our flight didn’t depart until… READ MORE

2013 NCS/USO Tour- Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan

September 12th, 2013 | Posted in News

Mason Mastrionni (B.C.) heading into the terminal at KAF Our last stop in Afghansitan was at Kandahar Air Field near Kandahar City in the south eastern region of the country. I had visited this base in 2010 as part of a previous USO cartoonists tour, so it was very interesting to return and see how things have changed. In our last visit to Afghanistan, we went directly to KAF from Ramstein Air Base in Germany, and spent our entire time billeted there while we flew helicopters to outlying FOBs each day. This time we only spend a day there, not even staying the night. Things… READ MORE
