Me and Tony Moore! Finally catching my breath (well, not really but getting some momentum going in the studio anyway) after attending C2E2 this past weekend. These conventions are always crazy and I end up chained to my table doing drawings all day for people and not getting much of a chance to walk around. That’s what I’m there for, so I don’t mind that at all but I do sometimes wish I could walk around a bit and see more than just my immediate area. Former MAD editor Al Feldstein passed away yesterday at age 88. No cause of death was listed but his health has been an issue for a few years now, or so I have been told. I never met or spoke to Al. He retired from MAD in 1984. I was busy graduating from high school that year and it would be another 16 years before I did my first MAD job. I did hear a lot of stories about him, though. Continuing with our “Game of Thrones” run, we have Emilia Clarke as everyone’s favorite buck-nekkid mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. There seems to be a distinct lack of buck-nekkidness on the part of Ms. Clarke this season… must be a benefit of either being the ruler of an army of the Unsullied or negotiating a better television contract. Congratulations to Renee Faundo on being chosen to recieve the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship in 2014! From the National Cartoonists Society Foundation Website: The National Cartoonists Society Foundation (NCSF) is happy to announce the winner of the 2014 Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship – Renee Faundo. Renee is a Character Animation major at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA. She was chosen from over 60 applicants for the award, which includes a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award Weekend in San Diego in May. This weeks Monday MADness is another rare find… examples of my final pencils pre-inking on the original art boards. Usually I don’t bother to scan the final pencils since I am already past the approval stage with the guys at MAD, so it’s rare for me to have done so. Apparently I did for the first three pages of “Dump My Ride” from MAD #456, August 2005. Oddly the last page I only have the rough scan for. This is one of only two parodies I have done the art for written by MAD‘s own Dave Croatto, who is also an editor on the magazine… READ MORE

Q: Just curious what made you decide to start doing comic-cons, and do you find you get a lot of fans that come and find you? A: I saved this one for today seeing as how I am currently at C2E2 in Chicago doing a comic-con! MAD is the red-headed stepchild of comic books. It sort-of is a comic book but not really. Debuting this weekend at C2E2 in Chicago, my new limited edition print: “The Game is Afoot!” Sherlock Holmes is one of literature’s greatest characters, and holds the Guinness World Book of Records title of “most portrayed literary human character in film & TV”, having been depicted onscreen 254 plus times by over different 75 actors.
